ST. PAUL — After leading his team to the state semifinals during a record-breaking senior season, Mahtomedi goaltender Ben Dardis was named the 2022 Frank Brimsek Award winner Sunday.

The Brimsek Award, given to the most outstanding senior goalie in the state of Minnesota, has been awarded each year since 1995. Dardis is the first goalie from Mahtomedi to win and first Class A goalie to earn the honor since Nick Althaus of St. Cloud Apollo in 2016.

Dardis broke the state record for career shutouts in February and finishes his high school career with 20 shutouts and 62 career wins. The previous career record for shutouts was 17 — held by Adam Coole of Duluth East and Michael Sperl of Little Falls.

He finished the 2021-22 season with a state-best .939 save percentage and 16-12-1 record, including a four-game stretch during which he did not allow a goal.

Dardis was a four-year starter for the Zephyrs and led them to three state tournament appearances. He helped lead Mahtomedi to a state championship as a sophomore in 2020, stopping 96 of 101 shots he faced over three games to earn all-tournament honors.
