It’s a big blow to the Detroit Red Wings, as forward Robby Fabbri will be missing the remainder of the 2021-22 NHL season with a torn ACL. Of course, this is especially rotten for Fabbri, who has now suffered the same injury in both legs dating back to his time with the St. Louis Blues.
He left last night’s game against the Minnesota Wild at Little Caesars Arena in the 2nd period after his knee fell awkwardly to the ice as he was attempting to retrieve the puck in the corner.
According to head coach Jeff Blashill, Fabbri will be seeking a second opinion, but the fear is that the injury is indeed a torn ACL.
“I feel absolutely terrible for him,” said Blashill earlier today after practice. “Not only has he had to grind through multiple ACL injuries in the past but also had to grind through the job of getting himself back to a spot without playing fear of injuries, and playing with the relentless nature needed to be successful. For this to happen on a pretty innocent play, I felt terrible for him.”
“I felt terrible for him last night, I feel terrible for him today. He knows what it takes to come back, and hopefully, he’ll come back better than ever, stronger than ever, and more determined than ever. Just from a human perspective, I feel terrible for him.”
Of course, this will be opening up an opportunity for the likes of Filip Zadina, who hasn’t put up the offensive numbers that the team was envisioning before the season.
“There’s no doubt, I think most players can excel more when they’re given more opportunities,” Blashill said. “That’s not always the case, but that’s the feeling generally.”
In the meantime, the Red Wings have recalled forward Taro Hirose from the Grand Rapids Griffins.
