After Grimes revealed Thursday that she had welcomed a second child with Elon Musk but broken up with him for a second time, a new report says that the musician has turned her romantic interests to famed WikiLeaks whistleblower Chelsea Manning.
“They’re getting serious. They U-Hauled it,” a source told Page Six about the fast-moving relationship of Grimes and Manning, both 34.“They’ve been living together in Austin.”
Neither Grimes nor Manning returned Page Six’s requests for comments. But the two, who are both 34, have been interacting in friendly ways on social media, according to Page Six.
Among other things, Manning “liked” multiple tweets having to do with Grimes, Page Six said. That includes the announcement of the singer’s Vanity Fair cover story, which was published Thursday morning.
In the story, Grimes revealed that she and Tesla CEO Musk had secretly welcomed a second child via surrogate, a girl named Exa Dark Sideræl, in December. Grimes said they call the girl Y, a fitting name, considering that Y has an older brother called X, born in May 2020; his full name is X Æ A-XII.
The Vanity Fair story also said that Grimes relocated from Los Angeles to Austin, Texas, presumably to be closer to Musk. That’s where his SpaceX company operates its Starbase complex and Tesla is opening a new factory.
Vanity Fair said Grimes now lives on a quiet cul-de-sac 15 minutes from downtown, a short drive from Musk’s Tesla factory and “less than an hour by private jet from Starbase.”
The story strongly suggested that the on-off couple were back on and enjoying a reconciliation. When Musk was named Time’s Person of the Year in late 2021, he suggested that they had broken up.
But that was around the time of their daughter’s birth, and Grimes told Vanity Fair how she would probably refer to him as her boyfriend. At the same time, she said their relationship was “fluid” and she didn’t expect other people to understand it.
But later Thursday, Grimes tweeted that she and Musk had broken up for good, since the writing of the article. “But he’s my best friend and the love of my life,” she added.
Meanwhile, Manning is a former U.S. soldier who made headlines in the early 2010s for leaking hundreds of thousands of military and diplomatic documents to WikiLeaks, including about U.S. airstrikes in Iraq and Afghanistan. She was convicted by court-martial in 2013 of violations of the Espionage Act. She was imprisoned from 2010 until 2017 when President Barack Obama commuted her 35-year sentence. She also came out as transgender in 2013 and is reportedly writing her memoir.
