Jake Jones was 6 years old when he first came to Hershey’s Giant Center with friends and fellow wrestlers Travis Riefenstahl, Jared Blobe among others.

They sat in the upper level while looking down on the Saturday parade of champions and dreaming of one day being a part of it all.

Jones doesn’t have to dream anymore.

The Saucon Valley junior made the Class 2A final at 172 pounds with a 5-4 victory over Southern Columbia’s Garrett Garcia.

Fellow Panther Ryan Crookham (138), Faith Christian’s Eric Alderfer (145) and Notre Dame-GP’s Brandan Chletsos (132) and Holden Garcia (145) also made the finals. Alderfer is the first Lion to reach the finals.

Jones is bidding to become Saucon Valley’s first state champion since brother Josh won in 2019. He’ll have to beat returning PIAA kingpin Rune Lawrence of Frazier. The sophomore is 66-4 in his career.

For a few hours, though, Jones is going to enjoy making his first state final after finishing fourth last year and falling short of a medal in 2019.

The junior did so by learning a lesson at the season-opening Top Hat tournament in Williamsport. He was leading 3A semifinalist Tucker Hogan of Daniel Boone 4-0 before giving up a takedown then losing his poise.

“I couldn’t recover,” Jones said. “I just couldn’t recover. It’s been happening all throughout high school until after that match.”

Jones has mauled many opponents since that setback on his way to a 45-3 record, but Friday’s semifinal didn’t come easy.

He gave up a takedown in the first period to challenge that December mantra. The Panther then escaped — not an easy feat against Garcia — and escaped again 10 seconds into the second period to tie the score.

Jones got a takedown with 1:08 left in the second before Garcia got an escape and was granted another to start the period to tie it again.

Garcia, who took injury time and recovery time in the second period, was called for a second stall warning with 95 seconds left. His first came with four seconds left in the first.

The Southern Columbia sophomore couldn’t penetrate Jones after that.

“I thought I was pretty calm out there [after falling behind],” Jones said. “I didn’t freak out and try to throw a front headlock. I think I had a pretty good strategy.”

Jones used up 49 seconds to deck Marion Center’s Gavin Stewart to reach the semis. It was his 34th pin this season among his 44 victories.

He has 105 career victories with one match and one season left. Brothers Jason (164) and Josh (154) are 1-2 on the school’s career wins list.

“I wasn’t worried about Jake’s conditioning,” Saucon Valley coach Chad Shirk said. “I was just concerned with being on the big stage and him just believing in himself.

“When you come down here, everybody’s so freakin’ good. It’s all between the ears. You just have to be mentally focused. You watch guys in Double-A and Triple-A, really good kids, going home without medals and it’s right upstairs.”

Crookham secured his third Class 2A finals appearance in as many tries with a 10-1 major decision over Meadowbrook Christian’s Cade Wirnsberger.

“He was playing the edge a little bit,” Crookham said. “I was just out there having fun and trying to score as many points as I could for the team race.”

Crookham registered takedowns in the first two periods to build a lead, then scored five points in the third to put the match away.

The two-time PIAA champion faces Harbor Creek senior Connor Pierce (37-0) in Saturday’s final.

“I think he’s going to come after me,” Crookham said. “I think a lot of points are going to be put up on the board. I know I can go all day with my cardio and my coaches train me and push me to my highest limit.”

Crookham is 16-0 this season, 115-3 in his career.

“I know he wasn’t happy with how he performed in the semis,” Shirk said. “But he needed to go through that. If everything is easy and you don’t face adversity, you’re not going to learn from it.

“He’s battle tested and he responded well tonight.”

Chletsos is in the final for the second year in a row, thanks to a 5-2 win over Midd-West’s Conner Heckman. He used takedowns in each of the first two periods to build the lead.

Garcia beat Glendale’s Zeke Dubler 3-0 to reach his first final. He was sixth last year and a state qualifier as a freshman.

Alderfer used an escape 22 seconds into the second period to win 1-0. He will have three state medals. Teammates Gauge Botero (113), Max Stein (132) Leo Muzika (285) are the first Lions other than Alderfer to win a PIAA medal. Botero wrestles West Perry’s Deven Jackson for third after losing in the semis and bouncing back to win 6-2 in the consolation semis.

Stein and Muzika will wrestle for fifth.

Saucon Valley’s Cole Hubert (106) and Notre Dame-GP’s Evan Maag (145) also lost in the state semis. Hubert bounced back to win his consolation semifinal to meet Notre Dame-GP’s Ayden Smith for a sixth time this year in the third-place match.

Smith lost earlier Friday in the quarterfinals, then dominated three consecutive matches to secure his second state medal.

Notre Dame-Green Pond's Brandan Chletsos beat Burgettstown's Joey Sentipal 5-1 to reach the 132-pound semifinals at the PIAA Wrestling Championships on Friday at Hershey's Giant Center.
Notre Dame-Green Pond’s Brandan Chletsos beat Burgettstown’s Joey Sentipal 5-1 to reach the 132-pound semifinals at the PIAA Wrestling Championships on Friday at Hershey’s Giant Center.

Hubert lost in the semis to defending state champion Louie Gill of Hickory 15-0 in 4:18. The Panthers freshman reached the semis with a 16-second pin of Berks Catholic’s Brayden Hartranft. It was his third win over Hartranft.

Gill knocked Smith into consolations with a 6-3 win in the quarters. It was his third win over Smith in the last year. Smith bounced back with a 20-5 technical fall in the blood round to secure his second state medal, then got a pin in 4:38 to secure a top-6 medal.

Blood round

Saucon Valley freshman Aiden Grogg’s season ended in heartbreak. He led 4-0 until Quaker Valley’s Jack Kazalas hit a five-point move in the final 10 seconds to win 5-4.

Notre Dame-GP’s Adam Schweitzer lost 3-2 at 120, when Quaker Valley’s Logan Richey secured the winning takedown with 42 seconds left. Teammate Bryson Vaughn lost 7-3 to Forest Hills’ Easton Toth at 138 to finish his junior year with 37 wins.

Crusader Garrett Tettemer secured his first medal with a 4-0 win over Marion Center’s Gavin Stewart at 172. He will wrestle for seventh.

Saucon Valley’s Ty Csencsits beat Notre Dame-GP’s Joey LaPenna for the third time this year at 189, 4-3 to secure his second state medal. Csencsits then lost Friday night and will wrestle for seventh for the second year in a row.

Teammate Dante Mahaffey did the same with an 8-2 win over Mount Carmel’s Damon Backes at 215. He then lost in the next round and will wrestle for seventh.

Panther Cael Markle earned his first state medal with a late takedown for a 9-7 victory over Girard’s Story Buchanan. He later lost 15-4 to Penns Valley’s Ty Watson. The senior will wrestle Saturday for seventh place.

Stein extended his season with a 4-2 win over Burgettstown’s Joey Sentipal at 132 to secure a medal. Stein then knocked off Cochranton’s Jack Martinec 7-0 to be ensured of a top-6 finish.

Muzika won 4-2 at 285 with a takedown in the second tiebreaker. He later picked up a pin of Hamburg’s Charles Sheppard to secure a top-6 finish.

Saucon junior Ty Pfizenmayer’s came up short of a medal at 285, losing 5-3 to Corry’s Xavier Reyda. He finished the year with 42 victories wrestling almost exclusively against much bigger competition.
