FRAMINGHAM — David Wright has been named Framingham High’s head football coach. He takes over for Rob Ferrante, who resigned after last season.

Wright, who grew up in the south and served eight years in the Air Force, was Framingham’s freshman coach last season. He has been a fixture in youth football in the area, in Framingham and coincidentally, Natick, Framingham’s arch-rival. Wright and former Natick great Paul Ghilani once coached Natick’s Pop Warner A team.

Wright has set high goals for the Framingham Flyers. In his job interview he stressed a major task will be to “get kids in the program and retaining them. Last year we had about 90 kids at camp, but just 40 once the season started.”

When Ferrante decided to step down, he called Wright and encouraged him to apply for the head job.

Wright expects to maintain the current staff and perhaps add one or two coaches.

Wright lives in Natick. His three stepsons played for Natick. One, dual-threat quarterback Scott McCummings, was the Daily News Player of the Year in 2010. He earned a scholarship to Connecticut. Wright has two other sons who also played for Natick.

Natick High coach Mark Mortarelli said Wright is “a nice guy with a lot of energy.” Of course, they will be on opposite sidelines on Thanksgiving morning. “We don’t say ‘Natick,’ we say ‘The team to the east,’” Wright joked.
