He was born in Cumberland, Rhode Island. He played three seasons at Cumberland High School before transferring to St. George's Prep. He repeated his junior year after reclassifying, playing two seasons at St. George's 

What is Tyler Kolek known for?

He was the Atlantic-10 Conference Rookie of the Year in 2020-'21 at George Mason. He started 18 of 22 games for the Patriots and averaged 10.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. He was one of only 11 freshmen in the past five seasons (and the only one in 2020-'21) to average a stat line of 10.0 ppg./2.4 3-pt. FG/2.0 apg./.350 3pt FG%. He chose MU over Oklahoma, Penn State, Virginia, Butler, Providence and many other schools. He will have four seasons of eligibility at MU with the extra year granted by the NCAA. He made his first Marquette start against SIUE with 28 minutes of playing time, 10 points, nine assists, three steals and two rebounds (Nov. 9)  He had 18 points, eight assists, and six rebounds against West Virginia (Nov. 19) in the Charleston Classic.

He sang along to "Take Me Home, Country Roads" in the final minute of Marquette's win over West Virginia. As a member of famed AAU program Middlesex Magic, Kolek led the team to a Hoop Group Showcase League Championship in 2019. New England Recruiting Report listed Kolek as the No. 2 ranked player in the state of Rhode Island and put him at No. 14 overall in the New England region. He was the 2019 Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year. His father played at Southeastern Massachusetts University (now the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth).
