It is so great to see this. Major artists donating their services to help the Ukrainian people. Good for the college too, especially Mannes.

You know, thinking about it this morning after I read this, I suddenly realised that Philip Glass is probably the only American classical musician who even approaches the household name level that Bernstein had.

      Barber,Copland,John Adams?????

      • V.Lind says:

I meant “living,” sorry. And the others, while famous, would not be recognised if you polled a crowd of people leaving a cinema, or at McDonald’s.

I just mean Glass is someone they know, or know of, in some vague way, in the same way that they knew Bernstein. He’s not AS famous, as he is not as flamboyant — can’t imagine a latter-day Tom Wolfe writing a magazine piece about one of his parties – he’s someone a lot of people know about and whose music they recognise.

I doubt one American in ten thousand would have heard of Adams, let alone recognise a note of his work.

      • Simon Greenblatt says:

Hardly anyone outside of those are classical music fans would know Barber of John Adams.

        • V.Lind says:

You’re not very clear, but if you are saying classical fans would recognise the names, of course they would. If you are saying that classical music fans don’t go to McDonald’s, or the cinema, you’re a snob. And wrong.

  • Schnitzel von Krum says:

That’s a bit like sending James Blunt to the front to frighten off the invaders. (He himself would probably suggest it, if he hasn’t already – a rare man able to laugh at himself.)
