Former New York Jets star John Abraham is not sold on Zach Wilson

It’s safe to say that New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson does not exactly have unanimous approval from the alumni of his current organization.

In February, Super Bowl III MVP Joe Namath expressed uncertainty about Wilson’s future in New York, particularly questioning his size.

Now, another former Jet has publicly provided a lukewarm review of the BYU product: John Abraham.

Appearing on the “Upon Further Review” podcast, Abraham suggested that the Jets draft another quarterback to push Wilson.

“I’m so stupid, I would draft another quarterback. I would. I would literally draft another quarterback,” Abraham said. “I don’t got nothing bad to say about Zach, but I’m just like, I don’t know if he’s the guy.”

Abraham isn’t necessarily asking for  New York to find Wilson’s replacement, but he wants the Jets to push their young quarterback.

“Let’s just shake the table up and show you, like, if you want this job, we’re going to bring somebody in that can take it … Not saying Zach can’t play in the league, you know, he just ain’t had his opportunities yet being a rookie, but I definitely [would] put a lot of pressure on him this year.”

Abraham made sure to add that he doesn’t think the team’s quarterback addition should be with its first draft pick. With their fourth overall pick, Abraham identified the defensive line as a need they should attack.

“I think they need a defensive lineman. I think that would be very good for them,” Abraham said. “Solidify D-end, kind of like Shaun Ellis, somebody that can stay there for 10 years.”

The Jets have been trying to replace Abraham ever since he played his last down for the team in 2005. He is third on the team’s all-time sack list with 53.5 sacks and remains the team’s most recent edge rusher to post more than 10 sacks in a season, which he did in 2005 with 10.5 takedowns.

I don’t see this as him giving a luke warm review of Zach more than he’s just saying he’d double down until they KNOW they have “the guy.” Let’s be honest, do we know Zach’s the guy? Let’s just say, there are major questions, and he didn’t show enough as a rookie to think he’ll even be a good starter. Luckily there are no QB’s in this draft or this would be a HUGE story. After what we saw last season if they Jets had the opportunity to draft someone coming out of college rated the same as: Mahomes, Watson, or heck even someone like Mac Jones (all players picked past #4) it wouldn’t be a slam dunk to stick with Wilson.
