Nancy Anita (Elmore) Cook, 63, of Magnolia passed away Friday, January 27, 2023at her home surrounded by her family. Nancy was born June 17, 1959 in Magnolia to the late Julious Walter Elmore and Kathleen Faye (Pearce) Elmore. Nancy was a lifelong member of the Philadelphia United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer. She worked as the city clerk and water department manager for the City of McNeil for 18 years. She was also a key organizer of the annual Festival on the Rails in McNeil.

CONWAY -- The University of Central Arkansas has named Columbia County students who are fall 2022 Presidential Scholars, or who made the Dean’s List.

The Southern Arkansas University System Board of Trustees will meet in regular session at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 2 at the SAU Tech Student Center in East Camden. The agenda includes the annual Board of Trustees election of officers; comments by Dr. Trey Berry, SAU president, and Dr. Jason Morrison, chancellor of SAU Tech; academic program changes at SAU and SAU Tech; 2020-2021 audit reports from SAU and SAU Tech; and a resolution on state policy for reimbursement of expenses for Board of Trustees members.

We should have noted in our recent coverage of Gov. Sanders’ pledge to get U.S. 82 four-laned across South Arkansas, that other than appointing Highway Commission members, Arkansas governors have very little influence over highway construction. That’s been true since passage of the Mack-Blackwell Amendment in 1952, which created an independent board to manage the state’s highways. A governor can be a cheerleader for taxes and bond issues for road programs, which the Highway Commission spends at its discretion. But, that’s about the extent of the governor’s authority. Most of the people making highway decisions through the governor’s first term will be appointees of her predecessor, Asa Hutchinson. And if those appointees really are the former governor’s friends, it should make for some interesting dynamics.
