Alabama women's basketball upsets Georgia in SEC Tournament, Kristy Curry gets 150th win at school

Alabama women’s basketball coach Kristy Curry got her 150th win at the school in a 74-62 win over No. 21 Georgia in the second round of the SEC Tournament at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Thursday.

Alabama used a big first quarter by Brittany Davis and took a 16-point lead into the half. The second half saw the teams trade runs, and Georgia closed Alabama’s lead to nine going into the fourth quarter. Alabama was able to hold on and extend its lead for its sixth win in its last eight games.

The Crimson Tide (17-12) was led by Davis with 26 points, five rebounds and five steals. Megan Abrams had 24 points with seven rebounds.

Georgia coach Joni Taylor, the former Joni Crenshaw, played for Alabama from 1997-2001, helping lead the Crimson Tide to two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Significant win for Alabama

Curry’s 150th win gives Alabama its second-best win of the season and a boost for its NCAA Tournament or WNIT resume. Curry is in her ninth season leading the Crimson Tide. The win is her 459th win, with previous stops at Purdue and Texas Tech.

Curry has seen a rise in success recently at Alabama, taking the Crimson Tide to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1999 and the SEC Tournament quarterfinals for the second straight year.

Brittany Davis leads a big first quarter

Davis scored the first 11 points for Alabama to kickstart a 15-2 run that helped Alabama hold a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter. For the period, Davis had 13 points, four rebounds and three steals on her way to her 11th 20-point game of the season. 

Alabama held the Bulldogs scoreless for the last four minutes of the quarter while forcing seven turnovers that led to nine Alabama points.

Alabama rotational players take advantage

Allie Craig Cruce followed up her career-high 14 points in the round one win over Auburn with a 10-point, six-rebound performance against the Bulldogs. Taylor Sutton added seven points for the Crimson Tide with shots that came at important moments. Sutton had the highest plus-minus on the team at plus-18 in 14 minutes.

Alabama will face No. 3 seed Tennessee on Thursday at approximately 8:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network. The game will tip off 25 minutes after the conclusion of Kentucky-LSU.
