SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - More than 4,500 votes separate Reggie Smith and Shelley Luther in the final tally for Texas House District 62.

“We’re just very gratified and elated,” said Smith. “I mean it was a hard fought contest and just glad that it’s over.”

Incumbent Reggie Smith took home almost 60 percent of the vote in the Texas March Primary.

He is re-elected to serve as the representative for Delta, Fannin, Franklin, and Grayson Counties.

His third two-year term will start in January.

“I think that the voters appreciated what we’re able to accomplish in the last session,” said Smith. “I think that they understand the work always continues, that there’s always more to do.”

In his last session, Smith penned the house’s version of the heartbeat bill and contributed to Senate Bill 1, a voting integrity law.

When he gets back to Austin, he said he wants to keep working on SB1, but his first order of business will be the border.

“We must secure the border and protect the Texans and our Texas economy.”

He also said reducing property taxes is at the top of his list.

“I think those two things are going to be paramount.”

KXII reached out to Shelley Luther for this story but did not hear back.
