Funeral for Former Sheriff George Smith Set for Friday

A Funeral service has been set for former Hardin County Sheriff George F. Smith who passed away February 21 at the age of 89.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 -4:00 pm and 6:00 – 8:00 pm this Thursday, March 3 at the Schindewolf-Stout-Crates Funeral Home. 

The Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm Friday at the funeral home in Kenton.

Sheriff Keith Everhart stated that his office will participate in the former Sheriff’s funeral on Friday.

The flags will be at half-staff that day. 

Smith began his career in Law Enforcement with the Kenton City Police Department where he served for 16 ½ years. 

He then served as a Deputy Sheriff with the Hardin County Sheriffs’ office prior to serving as County Sheriff from 1981 – 2001. 

He was a lifetime member of the Buckeye Sheriffs’ Association where he was the recipient of the Medal of Honor 1994. 

In addition, in 1994 he was the recipient of the Law Enforcement purple heart for being wounded in the line of duty.
