After more than two years of waiting, Vikings: Valhalla is finally streaming on Netflix. Fans have already binged their way through the series and want to know what the future holds for Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) and co. after the huge battle at the end of Season 1.
The main cast of Vikings: Valhalla and creator Jeb Stuart spoke to Newsweek about the future of the show on Netflix.
Will There Be A Vikings: Valhalla Season 2?
There is good news for fans of Vikings: Valhalla—Season 2 is officially on the cards.
Even better, filming for Season 2 has already begun.
When Vikings: Valhalla was announced by Netflix back in November 2019, the streaming platform ordered 24 episodes in total. The first season had eight episodes; if season two follows with another eight, there is likely to be a third season, too.
At the moment, an exact release date has not been confirmed, but fans expect the series to air at some point in late 2022.
Vikings: Valhalla showrunner Jeb Stuart has not given too much away about Season 2, but, in a teaser for Newsweek, revealed the Vikings would be exploring a little bit more in the upcoming season.
He said: "I think in season two, [viewers] will see the Vikings sort of thrust out of Scandinavia, which is a very interesting piece. We know that the Vikings traveled, we know that they went to the New World, but we also know that they traveled to Russia, to the Rus, as they called it, and went down the Dnieper River to the Black Sea."
"They were great traders. So they went to Constantinople, they went to Egypt, they went through the Middle East. Viking DNA is found almost all over that part of Europe. They went to the Iberian Peninsula and obviously England and Ireland. So you can probably guess that my Vikings are going to get on their boats and explore a little bit," Stuart said.
The ending of Season 1 of Vikings: Valhalla saw an all-out war between the Christian and Pagan Vikings.
Olaf (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson), defending the Christians, launched a brutal attack on Kattegat against Pagans Jarl Haakon (Caroline Henderson), Freydís, and Leif.
He quickly declared victory, but it did not last for long. Following the arrival of King Forkbeard (Soren Pilmark) and Canute's (Bradley Freegard) men in Kattegat, Olaf's claims face a serious challenge in Season 2.
Elsewhere in the finale, Freydis and injured Harald fled Kattegat, leaving a bloodied Leif behind, while Queen Emma (Laura Berlin) took the throne from Queen Aelfgifu (Pollyanna McIntosh).
Other big casualties in the battle were Jarl Haakon and Jarl Kåre (Asbjørn Krogh), so fans should not expect to see them in Season 2.
As for Leif, he looked angrier than ever following the death of his close friend Liv (Lujza Richter), who was killed in battle. Soaked in blood, the episode came to an end with Leif holding his weapons and screaming.
Speaking about his character's journey in Season 2, Sam Corlett, who plays Leif, told Newsweek: "There's a bit of an unleashing of life for Leif at the end of season one, and so I guess it would be to explore where that can go. Can he contain it or is it better to let it free? You know, I think that that would be interesting to look at."
Vikings: Valhalla is streaming on Netflix now.
