Letter to the Editor: Regarding Emily Mitchell, Candidate for Select Board

~ Submitted by Sima Seymourian

When I first moved to Bedford twenty-seven years ago, I remember my mother noting how very civic-minded its citizens were. Emily Mitchell certainly fits this profile.

Her dedication to the town is evident through her work on the Select Board. Her many successes and accomplishments include; ensuring that meetings are more accessible and transparent, attending to our streetscapes by adding sidewalks in critical areas, establishing a Disability Commission to work toward ensuring that our public spaces are open and accessible to those with disabilities. She has assisted the town in receiving a yearlong Racial Equity and Municipal Action Plan pilot grant, thus helping to reduce racial divides. Emily has also recruited many new board and committee members, led by the Volunteer Coordinating Committee, to ensure broader representation of Bedford’s population.

I met Emily through St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Both of our families have attended there for over twenty years. Emily, along with her husband John, has led a biennial trip to West Virginia for our youth group through Appalachian Service Project for many years. This trip has afforded countless youth, (along with their adult leaders), an irreplaceable experience. It has given us a chance to gain perspective on what is important. I will be forever grateful for having had the opportunity to join several of these trips.

Please show your approval of Emily’s many endeavors by voting for her on March 12th. She will continue to earn your trust by working collaboratively with fellow Board members and the Town Manager to continue to make improvements to our beloved town.
