Sharks' Mario Ferraro out 6-8 weeks with fractured fibula

The San Jose Sharks fell to the Boston Bruins 3-1 on Saturday but experienced a different type of loss during the second period of that game.

Per Chelena Goldman of the NHL's website, Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro underwent surgery Sunday to repair a fracture in his lower left fibula that he suffered on Saturday while racing for the puck along with Boston forward Taylor Hall:

Ferraro is set to be sidelined for six to eight weeks of action. The Sharks currently sit in seventh place in the Pacific Division standings at 24-23-6 and will finish the regular season on April 29.

"His spirits are down. I know he was down after the game last night," Sharks coach Bob Boughner said of Ferraro before Sunday's home win over the Seattle Kraken. "It's a tough injury with only two months go on the season."

Ferraro recorded two goals and nine assists across 48 games this season before his injury. He becomes a spectator while leading the team with 101 hits and 127 blocked shots, and he's second among San Jose players with an average of 23:19 of ice time per contest, according to ESPN stats.

"There's nobody in this room that loves to come to the rink and play more and be around the guys and do something he loves to do more than Mario," Boughner added. "I think that really is tough on him. He plays hard and he's stayed, for the most part over his first few years, pretty healthy for a guy who goes through the wall every night. So it's a setback. There's no sugarcoating it."

The Sharks next play at the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday.
