ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – On Saturday, Roanoke City Councilman Joe Cobb announced his plan to run for re-election to Roanoke City Council this November.

Cobb has served on Council since 2018.

“Transforming our city into all that it’s meant to be requires us to care, connect, and create. It’s inspiring to see how our city has come together to address issues from COVID to social justice, and I’m committed to continuing the challenging, yet promising work we’ve already begun.”

During Cobb’s first term, he says he’s proud of several accomplishments including establishing new community services, a comprehensive and collaborative COVID response, and maintaining positive revenue and sound budget operations.

“Through a community-led effort, we infused over $80 million in COVID relief funds into Roanoke,” said Cobb. “Whether via small business grants, rent relief, nonprofit assistance, or health initiatives, that money has gone to help Roanokers get through this pandemic. During that time, we still maintained positive revenue and offered new services and improvements, such as free financial coaching through the Financial Empowerment Center, infrastructure upgrades, and a minimum wage increase to $15 per hour for all city employees.”

If re-elected, Cobb says he will focus on continuing to connect Roanokers with the resources they need to lead fulfilling lives.

“People live here, move here, and stay here for a reason,” Cobb said. “We want to help our small businesses grow, address the root causes of gun violence and opioid addiction, and strengthen quality of life offerings, like outdoor recreation and arts and culture. We’re already implementing solid plans on those fronts and more. I hope to continue serving Roanoke through our positive transformation.”
