Upcoming sci-fi TV shows for 2024 & beyond

When it comes to sci-fi TV shows, there's a lot to look forward to in 2024. As streaming platforms become increasingly invested year on year in the genre, there's copious futuristic concepts being dreamt up and transformed for the small screen.

Whether it's breathing new life back into old, but iconic, much-loved shows or more video game franchises making their way to TV, there's an abundance of new options coming in hot for sci-fi fans everywhere. Space travel, superhero sagas, and action-packed titles fill our list below.

There are some entries that have release dates yet to be announced, but with our ears to the ground, we'll be sure to update them as soon as we hear anything. Invincible (Season 2, Part 2) - March 14, 2024

• Cast: Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, J.K. Simmons

While season 1 was a full eight episode run, Invincible season 2 has left fans in limbo by splitting itself in two. Four episodes dropped in November 2023 and there's another four hurtling towards Amazon Prime right now. Finally, we'll get some resolution to the almighty cliffhanger that Invincible left viewers so recklessly dangling from.

To summarize (no spoilers): the show follows Invincible, a teen with the most powerful superhero on the planet as his father. Invincible embarks on a journey to discover the strength of his own powers, while also uncovering (and unraveling) the legacy of his father.

This show has an excellent roster of voice talent and an action-packed storyline, all wrapped up nicely with dark adult-themed superhero humor. Fans of The Boys will want to give this one a watch.

X-Men '97 - March 20, 2024

More X-Men? More X-Men! X-Men '97 is the much-anticipated revival of the iconic 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series. Picking up, as the name suggests, as a continuation from 1997 where the last one left off, there are new challenges for the team as they learn to cope in the midst of Professor X's absence.

Arriving on Disney Plus on March 20, names from the original series are set to reprise their roles, alongside a bunch of new ones. We're talking Chris Potter as Gambit, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, and many, many more.

At the helm of this much-pleaded for sequel is writer Beau DeMayo – known for Moon Knight, The Witcher, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – so you know it's going to be epic!

3 Body Problem - March 21, 2024

• Cast: Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Benedict Wong

Based on the novel of almost-the-same name (The Three-Body Problem) from Cixin Liu, 3 Body Problem is an upcoming sci-fi adaptation from Netflix. The streaming service is now firmly grounded in the genre and has bravely taken it upon itself to transform a deeply complex sci-fi book into an eight-episode saga.

The 3 Body Problem tackles space and time whilst looking at humanity's first contact with aliens and impending alien invasion. It's a complicated topic, but one that'll be tackled by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss – if they can translate Westeros, then there's hope for the universe.

The show follows a nanomaterials expert who discovers a countdown that puts him under military investigation. To find the truth, he dons a super cool VR headset and enters a mysterious VR game called Three-Body that will hopefully untangle the web of lies. It takes place across a series of timelines, jumping backwards, forwards, and in the present-day throughout. With such an ambitious project comes a cast list full of big names. It may even make its way onto our best sci-fi TV shows based on books given time (and space)…

Fallout - April 12, 2024

The Last of Us, Halo, Resident Evil, Twisted Metal… much-loved and well-played gaming franchises have become quite the hot pick when it comes to creating new TV shows. One such title that's been long-awaited is Fallout and it's coming to Amazon Prime on April 12, 2024 with Bethesda figureheads, Todd Howard and James Altman, onboard as executive producers.

The original premise of nuclear technology after WWII creating a new society that resides in fallout bunkers is still the same. However, the post-apocalyptic drama will takes a slightly different path to the storyline of the main Fallout games. What we do know is that the Fallout TV show will follow Lucy (Ella Purnell), a vault dweller who decides to venture outside to see what's left of the world, specifically Los Angeles. Aside from that, the plot has been kept firmly under wraps.

Dead Boy Detectives - April 18, 2024

• Release date: April 18, 2024
• Cast: George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, Kassius Nelson, Briana Cuoco

Dead Boy Detectives follows detective duo, Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) and Edwin Paine (George Rexstrew). They're two teens that decide instead of entering the afterlife, they'd rather stay on Earth to become detectives set on investigating supernatural crimes. Unsurprisingly, the title of this TV show gives that away.

It's a story written by Neil Gaiman for DC Comics and it's been a long time coming. After a move over from HBO Max to Netflix, Dead Boy Detectives has finally found a home and a release date of April 18, 2024.

There'll be eight episodes following the boy detectives solving different cases from the Lighthouse Leapers to the Two Dead Dragons to a Very Long Stairway. Color us intrigued. Originally a spin-off from Doom Patrol, it's since been confirmed that Dead Boy Detectives joins the same universe as 2022's The Sandman series, also on Netflix.

House of the Dragon (Season 2) - June 2024

• Cast: Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans

Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon has become a shining star in its own right. Set over 200 years before the Game of Thrones that fans know and love, there's a lot to be discovered in this complicated world of warring families and dynasties.

Based on George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood book, this TV series sees the Targaryens stand front and center in Westeros, at the height of their power. However, with such power comes many terrifying opportunities to tear them down from the Iron Throne.

With such a complex tale, there’s plenty left to say. Expect the plot to pick up where season 1 left off – plenty of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), lots of bloodshed, and more dragons.

The Acolyte - June 4, 2024

• Cast: Carrie-Anne Moss, Dafne Keen, Amandla Stenberg

Next up for the Star Wars franchise is The Acolyte. This series is a live-action adventure based in the final days of the High Republic era with the rise of the Dark Side. According to Lucasfilm, that means taking viewers into a 'galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers.'

The Acolyte follows a former Padawan that reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of sinister crimes. It'll be the furthest back fans have ever gone in the Star Wars timeline, with the show set almost a century before Anakin was even born.

Confirmed as part of the cast are Amandla Stenberg as the Padawan and two Jedis, Rebecca Henderson and Joonas Suotamo. Fans will also be happy to know that the series will kick off with a two episode premiere on June 4, 2024.

The Boys (Season 4) - June 13, 2024

• Cast: Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty

It's been quite the wait for The Boys season 4, but don't you worry, daddy's home. Fans will once again get to watch these highly questionable superheroes return for more utter chaos in June. Although Amazon Prime didn't leave us completely in the dark between seasons, as the teen spin-off Gen V with its equally dark humor spun its very own web of twisted epic superhero-on-superhero fights.

The Boys season 4 will continue the fight of Butcher and The Boys against Homelander and The (interchangeable) Seven. It's a show full of anti-superhero politics and fighting left, right, and center. With the mess that season 3 left itself in, we expect a lot more of the same to come.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries - September 19, 2024

• Cast: Kathryn Hahn, Patti LuPone, Miles Gutierrez-Riley

Next up is WandaVision spin-off and new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (previously referred to as Agatha: House of Harkness and then Agatha: Coven of Chaos). Reprising her role as Agatha Harkness, Kathryn Hahn takes center stage in her true powerful witch form after masquerading as Wanda's neighbor, Agnes. Patti LuPone has also confirmed she'd be joining the coven as 450-year-old witch, Lilia Calderu (Beau is Afraid), alongside Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) and Joe Locke (Heartstopper).

The plot for the show currently remains unclear with the MCU keeping it locked down, although star Kathryn Hahn did inform Entertainment Tonight that the plot is "gonna go a million different avenues, kinda like WandaVision." What we also know is that there will be a nine episodes available to stream on Disney+ come September 19, 2024.

Dune: The Prophecy - Late 2024

• Cast: Camilla Beeput, Sarah Lam, Emily Watson

Frank Herbert's Dune universe is expanding even further and continues with a spin-off prequel TV show. Previously titled The Sisterhood, Dune: Prophecy takes place 10,000 years before 2021's Dune and 2024's Dune: Part Two.

It'll be centered on the lives of the Bene Gesserit. Already depicted on the big screen, the Bene Gesserit are known as the powerful sisterhood that have superhuman abilities. Sisters Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) establish the fabled sect and that's about all we know so far. That, and it'll be coming to the streaming service HBO Max.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew - Late 2024

• Cast: Kerry Condon, Jude Law, Ryan Kiera Armstrong

When it comes to Star Wars, the offerings are plentiful. There's a roster of new entries coming to Disney Plus in 2024 and Skeleton Crew is one of them. The coming-of-age story is set to follow four kids looking to find their way home after becoming lost in the galaxy.

Created by 2017-2021's Spider-Man trilogy director Jon Watts and screenwriter Christopher Ford, Skeleton Crew's plot specifics are pretty unknown aside from a closed doors footage reveal. It's reportedly set in the Star Wars timeline after the fall of the Empire, meaning it could possibly intertwine with other shows set in that same ilk, like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett.

Ironheart - September 3, 2025

• Cast: Dominique Thorne, Aiden Ehrenreich, Manny Montana, Anthony Ramos

Another TV show to add to MCU's Phase 5 slate is Ironheart. After first appearing in 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) is getting her own spin-off and origin story. Creating her own tech-laden suit similar to that of Iron Man, Ironheart has her very own hero tale to tell.

So, how did she become Ironheart? Well, season 1 looks set to explore her beginnings. In the comics, the genius MIT student uses her skills to build a suit worthy of superhero status. However, where there's triumph, there's also terror; Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) has been confirmed to be taking on the role of dark arts villain, The Hood.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (season 3) - TBC 2025

• Cast: Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Christina Chong, Melissa Navia

Star Wars isn't the only 'star' in the sci-fi TV show landscape though, as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is heading into its third season on Paramount Plus. As with the last two seasons, there'll be ten episodes to look forward to. While it's most certainly on its way, due to Hollywood strike delays, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds won't hit screens until 2025 unfortunately.

Strange New Worlds is the prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series that follows Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew on the USS Enterprise. Season 2 treated fans to such delights as a full musical episode, a crossover animated episode with 'Lower Decks,' and a classic 'To Be Continued' major cliffhanger finale. We can't wait to see what more Strange New Worlds has to offer.

Daredevil: Born Again - TBC 2025

• Cast: Charlie Cox, Margarita Levieva, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jon Bernthal

You may have noticed that as Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) made a cameo appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but that's not where his story ends. There's a lot more to explore when it comes to the comics and, unsurprisingly, the plot for Born Again has been heavily speculated and fans are eager to know which thread the Daredevil TV show will pick up.

Characters you can expect to see include, of course, Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio), Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal), and a few more familiar faces.

While Daredevil once lived on Netflix with three seasons and The Defenders Saga collection of Marvel shows, it now has a new home on Disney+. After its cancellation in 2018 though, fans have been left wanting. Unfortunately, due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, this one has been delayed indefinitely with a question mark over 2025 after previously announcing itself for spring 2024.
