Letter to the Editor: Regarding Emily Mitchell, Candidate for Select Board

~ Submitted by Sarita Pillai

I am pleased to write this letter of support for Emily Mitchell, candidate for re-election to the Bedford Select Board.  I have known Emily for 9 years, since moving to Bedford in 2013.  We first met when my family and I began attending St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where Emily is a longtime parishioner.

At St. Paul’s, I have witnessed Emily’s dedication to the church community. Emily consistently contributes to many aspects of the church’s leadership and operations and currently co-leads the High School Youth Group, a role she has served in for close to 20 years.  As a Bedford parent, she has supported our students and schools through her leadership of the Bedford Patrons of Music Students (POMS) and as parent coordinator of the JGMS musical for six years.  As a Bedford Select Board member, she serves as liaison to the Planning Board, the Library Trustees, the Volunteer Coordinating Committee, Bedford Cultural Council, Community Media Committee, Disability Commission, Bedford Community Partnership, Youth and Family Services, Hanscom Area Towns Committee, and Hanscom Field Advisory Commission.

Emily has proven to be an energetic, well-informed, and thoughtful member of the Select Board in her first term.  Her core values embody caring and kindness. She brings extensive experience serving the town in various capacities, strong relationships with board members and Town staff, and a deep commitment to clear communication and transparency in her approach and voting decisions as a Select Board member.

Perhaps most importantly, Emily’s dedication to improving town life and governance extends beyond her own involvement in town committees and activities.  She was instrumental in encouraging me to run for Library Trustee in 2017 and encouraged me to join the board of The Bedford Citizen, which I continue to serve on today.  In her work with youth and in leading by example, she exemplifies what it means to be an active and engaged citizen and inspires those around her to be champions for positive change in our community.

I encourage you to learn more about Emily and her “big three” ideas: accessibility, livability, and inclusivity here: https://www.emilymitchellforbedford.org/issues/).

Please join me in voting for Emily Mitchell on March 12th!
