Increasing Gas Prices, Yikes

Reported by edhat readers

  • Gas prices are on the rise but still not as crazy as signs I’ve seen on the news. $4.40/gal in Goleta

  • Cheapest gas in town today for regular is at Summit on Milpas (4.37/gal). Get it now before it goes up!

  • We don’t have to wait for the price of gas to go up. It’s already happening. This photo shows the prices for gas at a station on Main Street in Cambria over the weekend.

  1. The higher gas prices are not because of Russia/Ukraine. If the US said today that we will restart keystone pipeline and other oil/gas leases, our fuel prices would drop and we could put more pressure on Russia. Russia/Ukraine is a symptom of our energy policy. Our prices are a symptom of our energy policy. Iran 100% shall never have a nuclear capable warhead. Russia is teaching us in real time why not.

  2. Biden needed to go all out on sanctions last week. We need to work with the EU to cut off Russia’s access to SWIFT banking ASAP. Not sure why Biden is holding back…we must throw all sanctions at that madman (Putin) right now!!!!

  3. 154pm – He has bizarrely been holding back on sanctions for the last several weeks. It’s time to throw everything we have at it…and I don’t see how or why the European allies would be against it. This needs to be on the table…Biden needs to push harder.

  4. Gas prices have started rising as soon as Biden shut down the US Energy sector the day he was inaugurated.
    Those are facts.
And since then gas prices have gone up around 50 % and this reverberates through the whole economy and is one of the two major causes of current inflation.
All steps of production use gas and hence had no choice but increase price.
This is true for food items as well as any manufactured product.
Thank Biden and enjoy filling up for $ 70 rather than $ 40 just 15 months ago ..

  5. @ Duke :
Despite what Biden claims , he and the Europeans are NOT on the same field and it is the Europeans who will NEVER use the “Swift” weapon.
Why ? Because Europe gets 40 to 50 % of their energy resources from Russia, and if Russia were kicked out of Swift : the Europeans could no longer PAY FOR their Russian gas and oil (payments go through Swift) and hence would not get supplied anymore.
This is never explained in the “well meaning” press but it is the sad reality of that situation which means that the “so united” allies will NEVER use the Swift weapon and hence Putin will never be subject to any “serious” sanction.

  6. If only a prior president would have taken a stronger stance calling out the hypocrisy of NATO members; members who want the USA to protect them from Russia, while simultanestouly buying 40-50% of their energy from Russia, providing Russia with not only billions of dollars but considerable leverage over the NATO countries economies as well, all the while the member countries weren’t contributing their 2% GDP towards NATO as agreed. Now those same countries are objecting to the harsh sanctions like SWIFT removal. They don’t care at all about Ukraine, they just want their cheap fossil fuels.

  7. Does anyone remember the sub launched ICBM (identified as such by a former Secretary of Defense) off LA? Launched towards sea and caught by news chopper camera. The “experts” “went with the contrail theory”, but the video is clear in that it came up from the sea. All this is to say that ICBM’s are likely only 2-5 minutes away….. Consider that. MAD could be near instantaneous. So NO! Don’t “just bomb him”.

  8. Come on man…. look at the positive though: there are no more mean tweets. That’s worth a dollar a gallon right? AND, we’re helping out less fortunate countries by buying our fossil fuels from them vs. producing it domestically. It’s all about the greater good and the benefits that come with our higher gas prices.

  9. National security is directly related to being energy self sufficient… WE ARE NOT, even though we have the natural resources and 18 months ago WERE 90% petroleum independent… Look at Western Europe. They had nuclear energy and closed all plants. NOW , even though there are “Green Windmills” all across Europe, they CANNOT come close to meeting the heating energy needs- THEY NEED RUSSIAN natural gas and are dependent on them… DUH.

  10. @ 3559 :
They are talking about it now and I haven’t heard anyone talk or write about it (Right NYT and WAPO) and they’re only talking about it now because it has become so obvious that they can’t hiding it anymore the way they are hiding all the bad news for Biden .

  11. THE WINNER COMMENT Goes To FONDOFSB (2:21pm)…
===> Gas prices have started rising as soon as Biden shut down the US Energy sector the day he was inaugurated.

  12. Putin has been planning this atrocity for years…now that China is on board , he is going full steam ahead…Europe ,,& the USA no longer matter to him. He is obsessed with making Russia the USSR again. Sociopathic leaders are in Vogue & with that sociopathic Trump, the world is teetering towards dictatorship rule. WE must have America TOGETHER AGAIN to counteract this spooky trend. Putin never got our respect, so he could care less now what we think…so we must do! Do the right thing (s): more sanctions , support Ukraine in every way possible. Biden did NOT start the fire.!!,

  13. Chevy 67 :
And NONE of them confront Biden when he comes on stage and claims “we (our “allies”) are all on the same path and we all agree” which is a completely false statement and with this dispute among “allies” Putin will NEVER have SERIOUS sanctions !

  14. ConSB: That’s just mathematically incorrect. You take all of the potential federal leases and a fully functioning Keystone pipeline and it would barely make a dent in globally set oil prices. I like how cons get all Let’s go Brandon on the gas prices when oil companies sold $85 billion of gasoline and refined petroleum products last year to foreign countries instead of US drivers.

  15. Why wouldn’t gas prices go up if Russia attacks other states and more civilized countries are left with only the option of ‘sanctions’ against their economy. Russia supplies 7% of gas to the US, much more to Europe. At least the Biden adm is working to reinstate the Iran deal which, if done, would put Iranian petroleum back in the world system and alleviate the Russian shortfall. Personally I will pay more for gas as a much lesser cost than paying for war and the deaths and destruction that brings. I am comfortable that my position is the higher moral ground.

  16. As I posted elsewhere,
Hurting Putin and his cronies, the oligarchs, IN THE WALLET, actually IS the only way to have an effect on the war, to prosecute this war.
Dead citizens play NO role. It’s all about the money. And the sanctions I’ve read in depth about? Gonna hurt, gonna affect the money the rich make. Sanctions will make things happen. Dead soldiers and citizens, war refugees, all the suffering, any and every where, doesn’t matter at all, makes zero difference.

  17. Agree. This is the time for the US to work with our European allies. This comment by Aware is right on the spot in all respects. This is not Biden’s doing but long in the making, ever since the implosion and collapse of the USSR. Unfortunately, Ukraine has not had enough time to develop a strong country — it’s rife with corruption, with a weak president, a former comedian! But it has a strong sense of national unity, and we need to support it as best as we and the European Union can do together.

  18. Because Kiev (and Ukraine) will fall rather quickly with Russia Javi mg complete air superiority. Our first hand needs to be that this action is untenable…. Not slow sanctions that Putin shrugs off. This isn’t a poker tourney… this is a single hand with tens of lives at stake… we need to throw all non troop options at Putin now (and better yet would have been a week ago!).

  19. There have been 100k troops on the border for how long? Biden has slow played sanctions and essentially told Putin it’s a slap on the wrist. Biden didn’t start this fire, but he’s done nothing to stop it. Compel the EU to kick Russia out of the Swift banking system. It’s the last hope.

  20. Chillen – Ukraine is being invaded and no one will stop it because they want cheap Russian gas. Energy independence is of massive importance… we need more fossil fuels and green options… tog strongly restricting or limiting either is dangerous.

  21. 428am – because slow playing your KINGS as Putin is about to go all in with a 200k invasion force is… well it’s not good poker (or war deterrence). Biden will slow play this and out gas will stay under $5 a gallon. Thousands will die though…

  22. Hate to break it to you folks but if a dollar or two rise in the cost of a gallon of gas impacts you, you’re doing America wrong… Very, very wrong. And if you vote for the GOP and are here complaining about such a small amount of money? You’re definitely not in touch with reality or aware of how much you’re getting played by the very people who you support.

  23. @Santabarbaraobserver… “a dollar or two…?” try a 23 gal gas tank times $2.00 per gal more – that is $46.00 more per tank full and yes that IS significant for WORKERS trying to make it here in SB County… Maybe not you, a stay at home tech person, but have some empathy for the gardeners, convalescent home workers and others who can’t afford to live in SB and travel from SM, Lompoc and Ventura to provide the people of SB services… Don’t be a Dick.

  24. Like I said: You’re doing America wrong. You’re clearly a man of the people, a person who stand on the side of the workers… How much did you earn last year? Are you a salaried or hourly worker that receives a w2? If you earn less than 500k or receive a w2, you’re exactly the type of person the GOP loves to have on their side raging on the inter webs. Easily distracted, easily angered and more than will to do their bidding for absolutely nothing in return. Nothing.
