Leeds have lost six of their last nine Premier League fixtures, earning just seven points during that period. They could concede at least three goals in four successive league games for the first time since March 1960.

And then, after six unanswered goals, it was down to three points. Pep Guardiola’s description that Liverpool are a “pain in the ass” required the addition of the word “almighty” on Wednesday night as they bulldozed Leeds and took a mega bite into Manchester City’s lead at the Premier League summit.

There was zero sign of anxiety or elevated pressure from those representing the home side on the pitch in a game that took on much greater significance after Harry Kane’s towering 95th-minute header at the Etihad injected life into the title race.

Instead, there was a fury and ferocity to tear into Marcelo Bielsa’s side and cause increased discomfort for City, as told in the first half stats alone: three Liverpool goals, eight shots on target versus none.

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa admitted that he is worried about relegation after watching his team ship six goals against Liverpool at Anfield. Speaking after the match he said:

Mohamed Salah scored two penalties, either side of a rare Joel Matip goal from open play, to take his tally to 27 for the season in a 20-minute spell which provided an ideal warm-up for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

They could easily have doubled that score in the opening 45 minutes alone against the league’s worst defence which has now conceded 56 goals in 25 matches.

Liverpool close the points gap on Manchester City to just three points and have overtaken Pep Guardiola’s men on goal difference which may play a part in deciding the title later in the season.

90+3 mins: Icing on the cake. Liverpool win a corner that Andy Robertson swings into the box. Virgil van Dijk is wide open in the box and meets the ball six-yards out from goal with a powerful header that Illan Meslier has no chance to stop. Liverpool score six!

90 mins: Demolition. James Milner slots the ball down the right side with the outside of his right foot and manages to play Divock Origi in behind. He carries the ball into the area and tries to poke it around Illan Meslier who half stops it with his body. The ball comes loose though and falls to Sadio Mane who turns it simply into the back of the net.

86 mins: Mo Salah threatens to break into the box but checks his run as Leeds track back and wins a corner. Alexander-Arnold swings the set piece into the box but it is headed out to James Milner. He’s encouraged to shoot and does but the effort doesn’t burst through the cluster of bodies in the area and Leeds boot it clear.
