Cincinnati Reds reportedly agree to deal with veteran pitcher Zack Godley

According to Cincinnati Enquirer beat writer Charlie Goldsmith, veteran right-handed pitcher Zack Godley reportedly agreed to minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds. Godley appeared in two games for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021.

Originally drafted in the 10th-round of the 2013 MLB by the Chicago Cubs, Godley has spent seven seasons in the big leagues, including five with the Arizona Diamondbacks. In addition to the Brewers and D-Backs, Godley has also suited up for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox.

The Cincinnati Reds continue to add to their stable of starting pitchers, and with the uncertain futures of Sonny Gray, Luis Castillo, and Tyler Mahle, it's probably not a bad idea. That said, he addition of Godley is little more than minor league depth as his chances of landing a spot in the rotation are very slim.

A four-year stretch with the D-Backs yielded solid results for the University of Tennessee alum. Godley went 33-25 from 2015-2018 and posted a respectable 4.41 ERA over 444.2 innings of work. The right-hander owned a 3.91 FIP and 100 ERA+ during that span.

The 2019 season quickly went off the rails for Godley while in Arizona. A nine-game stretch saw the right-hander post a 6.39 ERA over 76 innings. Godley also surrendered 12 round trippers, a stat that saw him designated for assignment.

Zack Godley will be given an opportunity to crack the Cincinnati Reds starting rotation out of spring camp, but it won't be easy. Barring injury or a trade, the quartet of Sonny Gray, Luis Castillo, Tyler Mahle, and Vladimir Gutierrez are all likely to begin the season as part of the Reds rotation.

The competition for that spot will be a hotly contested one between left-hander Reiver Sanmartin, right-hander Riley O'Brien, and pitching prospects Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo. Ben Lively, who spent the past two years in the KBO, will also be given a chance to make the Reds roster
