Big 12 Football: McKenzie Milton sends subtle shot at Dillon Gabriel, OU

All of the movement in the NCAA Transfer Portal concerning quarterbacks around the Big 12 football landscape has made for a really interesting landscape for this conference in the midst of the 2022 offseason. Multiple high-profile programs around the Big 12 landscape will have new starting quarterbacks in 2022, including the likes of the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners.

For the Longhorns, it looks like it will be the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers as the starter this fall. And for the Sooners, it now looks like the former UCF Knights star junior quarterback Dillon Gabriel is projected to win the starting job in 2022.

But with the quarterback movement in the transfer portal for the Big 12 will come some level of polarized media reactions and criticism throughout the offseason. This is certainly the case with a recent shot that a fellow former UCF quarterback in McKenzie Milton appeared to take at an ex-teammate of his and Norman, OK, altogether.

The former UCF star quarterback and Florida State Seminoles transfer Milton took some shots at some different parts of the country where he feels like wouldn’t be as fun to play compared to the likes of Orlando and Tallahassee.

When talking with 969 The Game in a radio interview last week, Milton reportedly took a job at Norman and largely the midwest as a whole when asked about NIL prospects for current college football players. He gave his opinion by asking the question “would you rather be in Orlando, Florida or somewhere in the midwest”.

He then followed that up by saying “it’s kind of a no-brainer”. There was a response from the interview host saying “go ahead and say Lincoln, I dare you”. Milton responded by saying “what about Norman”.

Regardless of how he feels about Gabriel transferring to Oklahoma or Scott Frost with the Nebraska Cornhuskers as their head coach, Milton clearly took some sort of jab at Norman.

This is interesting, though, for Milton to seemingly be taking a shot at Frost and Gabriel leaving UCF for various Power Five programs in the last few years. But there appears to be some degree of hypocrisy here from Milton. It was just a couple of years ago that Milton entered the transfer portal to leave UCF for another blue blood Power Five program in Florida State.

No matter what, the transfer portal will continue to be one of the most polarizing storylines around college football. The increasing prevalence and importance of the portal around college sports is a fact of life now, especially in football.
