Pedestrian killed on U.S. 41

A 67-year-old man was killed Saturday evening after being struck by a sport utility vehicle while crossing U.S. 41 north of Venice, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Neither the pedestrian nor the 78-year-old man driving the SUV was identified.

The FHP reported that a little after 7 p.m. an SUV driven by a man from Hudsonville City, Michigan, was traveling north on U.S. 41 in the right light approaching the intersection of Collins Road, which is in the Laurel area of south Sarasota County. A man attempted to cross the northbound lanes of the highway when he was struck by the vehicle. 

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. 

No injuries to the driver or a passenger were reported. 

No other information was included in the FHP report.

It marked the second consecutive day the FHP reported a fatal accident. On Friday night the agency reported it was investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 65-year-old bicyclist who was attempting to cross University Parkway near Tuttle Avenue.
