Space Force spoilers below.

Bad news, fans of Space Forcethe show has officially aborted mission after two years.

Despite the cliffhanger ending and a lot of set-up for future episodes, it seems we'll now never know how Steve Carell's General Naird and his merry band of scientists and government agents dealt with the potential end of the world.

But what exactly went wrong? Here's everything that you need to know.

Space Force season 3: What happened?

tawny newsome as angela ali, diana silvers as erin naird, don lake as brad gregory, steve carell as general mark naird, ben schwartz as f tony scarapiducci, john malkovich as dr adrian mallory, jimmy o yang as dr chan kaifang, space force, season 2

Space Force had a divisive reception from the outset, despite its stacked A-list comedy cast.

Season one fared poorly with critics, but better with viewers (on Rotten Tomatoes, it scored a 39% critics score, but a 75% audience score). Re-angling the show toward the relationships of those on the force, season two proved much better, earning an early 100% critics score on the day of the show's release.

But the weight of the first season clearly turned some viewers off its return, and Space Force season two failed to last longer than a week in Netflix's top 10 overall carousel in any territory across the world.

Though maintaining its divisive and confusing standing, it fared much better in the top 10 TV shows list – lasting as long as 45 days in territories including Australia, Hungary and the US.

However, ultimately it seems most likely that Space Force was given the old heave-ho due in part to Netflix's sudden budget cuts. The streaming service suffered a series of losses in the first quarter of 2022, including a massive dip in subscribers which caused a plunge in their share price.

This, in turn, ultimately resulted in one of their biggest investors removing $1.1billion of funding (according to Forbes), which is gonna hurt. So Netflix has had to tighten its belts a little bit in order to get back on track. Sadly, cutbacks include Space Force.

Following the announcement of the show's cancellation on April 30, actor Ben Schwartz led the cast comments, and said: "Thanks to everyone who watched [Space Force]. Thanks to my hero Greg Daniels, Norm Hiscock & our incredible writers. And thank you to OUR ALL STAR CAST [Steve Carell, Tawny Newsome, Diana Silvers, Jimmy O Yang, Don Lake and John Malkovich]. F**k Tony loves you all. Siri, send tweet."

Space Force 3: Who would have been in the cast?

The jam-packed cast remained solid throughout the first two seasons, and it appears that the show would have continued with their lead stars all returning.

This includes Steve Carell (General Naird), Diana Silvers (Erin Naird), John Malkovich (Dr Mallory), Ben Schwartz (Tony Scarapiducci), Tawny Newsome (Andrea Ali), Jimmy O Yang (Dr Chan) and Don Lake (Brad).

Patton Oswalt also joined the cast (kind of, via video link) as Captain Lancaster, an astronaut living on a spaceship by himself somewhere between Earth and Mars after his mission was abandoned en route (sounds kind of ominous now... right?)

One actor we would have been surprised to see again is Lisa Kudrow, who plays Naird's imprisoned soon-to-be ex wife, Maggie. While we'll now never know what Maggie did to end up in jail in the first place, her time on the series was limited to about three video calls throughout the season two episodes.

Filing for divorce and with daughter Erin is spreading her wings as an adult, there was really no need for her to keep checking in. The character may be an outside force, but it seems Lisa's time on the show was over.

Space Force 3: What will the plot be?

Well, if Space Force does return somehow, the plot is a pretty obvious one – stop the asteroid, save the world, basically.

Naird and his team discovered a huge asteroid heading towards Earth at the end of season two, with the gang unable to think of anything apart from singing 'Kokomo' by The Beach Boys in a bid to keep calm.

So season three would have seen the gang figure out how to stop the asteroid before it's too late, seeing as it has a direct trajectory towards Earth. No big deal, really.

On top of that, Angela and Chan's relationship was just beginning develop, and Naird was attempting to balance his personal and work life as things come under even more pressure.

His daughter, Erin, would have been on a mission of figuring out life after graduating high school, and Captain Lancaster will probably still be wondering how the hell he's supposed to get back to Earth without going barmy.

Guess you're stuck up there forever now, bud.
