The Brisbane Lions have moved to lock up Joe Daniher long into the future with the star forward signing a new contract extension.

Already committed to the Lions for the next two seasons, Daniher has put pen to paper on a new contract that will see the former All-Australian stay with the Lions until at least the end of 2025.

The bumper new deal comes just one season after Daniher was signed as a free agent by the Lions following eight seasons with the Essendon Bombers.

"It's been fantastic,” the 27-year-old said after his new Lions contract was announced.

“I’m really enjoying the place, really enjoying the city. The team and club itself is in great shape."

Having been plagued with a variety of injuries towards the back end of his stint with the Bombers, playing just 15 games between 2018 and 2020, Daniher opted to exercise his rights as a free agent in pursuit of a change of scene, eventually winding up in Brisbane.

Daniher immediately found a home in the Lions' forward half in 2021, playing a record 24 games and booting 46 goals, an output that only fell second behind his 2017 campaign in which he was named as an All-Australian honours and crowned Essendon’s Club Champion.

Remarkably Daniher kicked at least one goal in every game of the home and away season, something he also hasn't achieved since that 2017 campaign.

Daniher said he's found the fit within Brisbane's forward line and squad as a whole seamless and looked forward to that continuing.

"I think I'm at the stage of my career where my role is to have the biggest influence on the group as I can and that's something I'm always consistently trying to do,’’ he said.

“Whether that be trying to help the processes and the way that we play or imparting that knowledge on the rest of the team.

“Basically, it comes down to being the best teammate I can be throughout the week and on game day.

“That's my role and that's something I'll continue to try and do."

Brisbane Lions list manager Dom Ambrogio said the club had been really impressed with Daniher's input since arriving at the end of 2020 and were looking forward to seeing him continue as a senior member of the squad further into the future.

“Joe hasn’t missed a beat since joining the Lions,’’ Ambrogio said.

“He set the tone in his first pre-season at the Club by being one of the only players to do every single session and he took that base and turned it into a very good debut season for our Club.

“His second pre-season has been just as productive.

“This extension is reward for Joe for the great start he’s made with the Lions and for us it is about locking away one of the key planks of our side to a longer-term deal.”

The Lions start their 2022 AFL campaign on Saturday, March 19th at home against Port Adelaide.
