2 women charged in overdose death of Elbow Lake man

The man died of an overdose in March of 2021.

GRANT COUNTY, Minn. – Two women have been charged in connection with the March 2021 overdose death of an Elbow Lake, Minnesota, man.

Rachel MacMillan, 24, of Elbow Lake and Montana Hedstrom, 30, of Dalton, were charged with third-degree murder in the death of Jonathan Murtland, 27, according to the Grant County Sheriff's Office.

According to a press release from the Grant County Sheriff's Office, Murtland was found not breathing in his home on March 2, 2021. He died several days later at the St. Cloud Hospital of a fentanyl overdose.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office investigated the circumstances surrounding his death. Through examination of text messages, interviews and other efforts, investigators determined that MacMillan and Hedstrom provided Murtlan with fentanyl that ultimately led to his death.

Hedstrom is currently in the Douglas County Jail and MacMillan is in the Otter Tail County Jail. Both are scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 24 in Grant County District Court.

"This case demonstrates that drug dealers who provide illicit drugs that cause the death of someone in our community will be held accountable," said Chief Deputy Jon Combs, Grant County Sheriff's Office.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the West Central Minnesota Drug and Violent Crimes and Drug Task Force.
