Carmen Villalobos Scores Season-High 16 Points as Women's Hoops Falls to NJIT

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Junior Carmen Villalobos scored a season-high 16 points as the Hartford women's basketball team fell,69-52, to NJIT on Saturday. Hartford falls to 2-20 overall and 2-9 in conference play while the Highlanders improve to 12-11 overall and 7-5 in the America East.

Hartford opened the game strong, going on a 6-0 run capped off by an and-one layup by Paula Maurina. NJIT would fight back, taking the lead after a 9-0 run of its own, holding a 9-6 lead at the 3:36 mark. Jabria Ingram immediately ended the Highlanders momentum with a layup, cutting the gap to 9-8. Ingram would again pull the Hawks within one, 11-10, before Carmen Villalobos gave the Hawks a 12-11 lead after sinking a floater. The Hawks would carry that lead into the second quarter. The Highlanders opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run, taking a 20-12 lead with 6:14 left in the quarter. Ingram put an end to the run, making a tough layup after a perfect inbound play. NJIT would reestablish a double-digit lead, until back-to-back Villalobos three points brought the Hawks within eight, 28-20, with 50 seconds remaining. NJIT would score the final points of the half, taking a 10-point lead, 30-20, into the half.
 
NJIT carried its momentum into the second half, starting out on a 5-0 run to take a 35-20 advantage in the opening minutes. Five straight points from Ingram brought the Hawks back within 10, but the Highlanders reestablished a 13-point lead, 41-28, at the 4:16 mark. The Highlanders extended its advantage to 16, taking a 52-36 lead into the fourth quarter. The deficit proved to be too much, as NJIT took home a 69-52 decision.
