RB Rankings: Jahmyr Gibbs

As we review the RB rankings, players have had a chance to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Jahmyr Gibbs, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

  • The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
  • Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
  • Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
  • We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

Incoming Alabama running back, Jahmyr Gibbs spent the last two seasons at Georgia Tech doing all he could to help the Yellow Jackets offense. He was a highly touted recruit and flashed almost immediately as a true freshman. Despite running behind a struggling offensive line with a limited passing game, Gibbs averaged over five yards per carry during his freshman and sophomore seasons. He was a versatile weapon for the Yellow Jackets in 2021, rushing for 746 yards and 4 touchdowns on 143 carries while also catching 36 passes for 470 yards and 2 touchdowns. Gibbs is an exciting all-purpose weapon who will have the opportunity to showcase his talent at Alabama.

Gibbs is an explosive runner who is makes people miss in tight spaces. He possesses excellent lateral quickness that allows him to set up defenders and get them off balances before escaping their grasp. Gibbs then uses his explosive acceleration to pull away and find open space at the second level. Defenders know they have very little time to square him up because of his burst, but his agility makes it even more difficult to get a clean shot on him when they think they have him. Gibbs is one of the most elusive backs in the country and turns missed tackles into long runs with his ability to pull away.

As dangerous as Gibbs is as a runner, he is equally proficient as a receiving threat. He uses his athleticism to consistently create separation against linebackers and safeties. Gibbs is very natural catching the ball, with the hands and body control of a wide receiver. He gets open, makes clean catches and then has the ability to make big plays after the catch in space. Gibbs receiving ability makes him even more dynamic and forces the defense to account for him at all times.

Jahmyr Gibbs is a talented running back who has plenty of big play ability. He is an elusive runner who has the ability to break away from the defense for a big gain. Gibbs is an excellent receiver out of the backfield who puts pressure on the defense in the passing game. At 5’11” 200 lbs he is a capable runner between the tackles, running with the some power inside and breaking arm tackles. In 2021 he continued his explosive play despite Georgia Tech’s struggles as a team, at Alabama he will have plenty of help around him and can show he is one of the best backs in college football.
