ORLANDO, Fla.The Orlando Magic on Thursday acquired Boston Celtics guard PJ Dozier and center Bol Bol, along with a future second-round pick and cash for a future protected second-round draft pick, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced Thursday.

Orlando used a traded player exception (TPE) to complete the deal. A TPE is created when one team can absorb into its salary-cap space the salary of another team's player and is good for a year after the deal was made.

The protected second-round pick Orlando is giving up is protected 31-55 in 2023.

To make room for the players they acquired, the Magic waived guards Michael Carter-Williams and E'Twaun Moore, two veterans who had not played all season.

Dozier is out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Nov. 23. The Magic later announced they waived Dozier, leaving them with an open roster spot.

Bol underwent surgery on his right foot on Jan. 18. He is expected to be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Thursday at 3 p.m. Eastern Time was the NBA trade deadline.

Boston entered the day about $3 million over the salary cap as the league's trade deadline loomed. It was in danger of being hit with the "repeater tax'' for being over the cap threshold in three out of four seasons. The 2021-22 salaries of Dozier ($1.9 million) and Bol ($2.1 million) will keep Boston from incurring that luxury-tax penalty.
