Fourth time’s a charm?
Brian Williams is taking over as Maryland’s defensive coordinator, making him the fourth coach to accept the job since Mike Locksley took over in 2019.
Williams, the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach in 2021, is taking over for Brian Stewart. The choice to promote Williams comes after the team was spurned by Kevin Steele, who originally accepted the job before taking the same position with the Miami Hurricanes.
Williams started with the Terrapins as an outside linebackers coach in 2019. He moved over to coach the defensive line in 2020.
The program also announced that it added Lance Thompson and Wes Neighbors to the staff. Thompson will coach inside linebackers, while Neighbors will lead the safeties.
The Terrapins allowed 30.7 points per game in 2021, ranking second-to-last in the Big Ten.
