January 1, 1988: University of Miami linebacker Randy Shannon and cornerback Tolbert Bain celebrate during a 20-14 victory over Oklahoma in the 1988 Orange Bowl. The victory gave Miami its second national championship and first undefeated season. Both Shannon and Bain were Miami natives who were originally recruited by Howard Schnellenberger and played their entire college careers for Jimmy Johnson. Both also had sons (Xavier Shannon and Travarous Bain) who played at the University of Miami.

A 1983 graduate of Miami Northwestern High School, Bain was a four-year starter for the Canes. Shannon came to UM out of Miami Norland High School and went on to start for 2 years at strongside linebacker. Shannon later became a coach. He was the defensive coordinator for Miami’s 2001 national championship team and was the school’s head football coach from 2007 to 2010.
