Verstappen secures pole for the Canadian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen completed another crushing performance to win the Canadian Grand Prix and match Ayrton Senna’s tally of 41 victories.

The Dutchman led every lap at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to draw level with Senna and extend his championship lead.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso finished runner-up, with Lewis Hamilton third for Mercedes. Hamilton’s team-mate George Russell retired on lap 55 of 70 following an earlier prang with the wall.

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finished fourth and fifth respectively for Ferrari, with Sergio Perez sixth. Alex Albon crossed the line a commendable seventh in his Williams. Verstappen, who notched up Red Bull’s 100th win in Formula One, now leads Perez by 69 points on his unstoppable march to a hat-trick of titles.

Red Bull chief Adrian Newey:

“It’s been an amazing journey, my dream as a kid was to be an engineer in motor racing. First job and first salary was the big moment, everything else is a bonus.

“All the wins are special. First win in Mexico stands out. The ones where the championship has gone down to the wire. Very often Abu Dhabi, with Sebastian against Fernando, and then Max against Lewis.

“I’m lucky enough to be doing what I’ve always wanted to do, loved it. My career can’t go on forever. As long as the team wants me and I keep enjoying it I’ll keep going, but realistically it’s on a countdown!”

Red Bull boss Christian Horner:

“To get a century of victories is an incredible achievement. 100 races is a lot - but 100 wins. That’s 24% of the races we’ve entered.

“We take it one step at a time. So many things can go wrong. There’s so many variables in this game. Max is driving out of his skin at the moment. Collectively, the group is doing a tremendous job.”

Some revealing Lewis Hamilton quotes in the cool-down room!

“We suck in the lower-speed corners. You [Verstappen] destroy me there. In pretty much all the corners.

“Your rear-end is insane; and so is yours [Alonso].”

Lewis Hamilton after finishing P3:

“It’s been a great weekend for us, we’ve been slowly chipping away. Aston were ahead this weekend with the upgrades.

“Quite an honour to be up there with two world champions, excited to be third and in that mix. We didn’t have the pace today. We knew this wouldn’t be our strongest circuit, we struggle in the slower-speed corners.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do to add rear-downforce to the car. I do believe we’ll get there at some stage.”

Fernando Alonso, after finishing P2:

“We were hoping to challenge the Red Bull but we lost a position to Lewis. But I couldn’t rest, the Mercedes was pushing. It was tough, very demanding race. 70 laps of qualifying today.”

Max Verstappen, after his 41st win in Formula 1:

“Very happy. It was not a very straightforward race, the tyres were not getting in their window. We made it work - to win the 100th grand prix for the team is incredible.”

On No 100: “It’s amazing. I didn’t expect to be on those sort of numbers myself!”
