February 9, 2022

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society continues its Journeys in Art History Exhibition on Screen series. Working with top international museums and galleries, Exhibition on Screen creates films which offer a cinematic immersion into the world’s best-loved art, accompanied by insights from the world’s leading historians and arts critics. The series continues with brand-new films each month through April. The focus of the Journeys in Art series is to introduce the works of history’s greatest painters and provide opportunities to view blockbuster art exhibitions from galleries worldwide.

“The Danish Collector: Delacroix to Gauguin” will be screened at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 14, and 6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive, Lewes.

For many years no one was interested in the art of the Impressionists, and artists like Monet, Degas and Renoir were vilified, attacked and left penniless as a result.

Then something remarkable happened - a new breed of collectors emerged and, before long, they were battling to acquire any work they could find by these new, radical artists.

Among them was the visionary Danish businessman Wilhelm Hansen, who amassed a remarkable collection housed at his summer home, Ordrupgaard, on the outskirts of Copenhagen.

Exhibition on Screen tells his fascinating story and, with exclusive access to a sold-out exhibition at London’s Royal Academy, brings the extraordinary collection to the big screen in high definition.

From Hansen’s beautiful house and gardens at Ordrupgaard to the streets of bohemian Paris, this film takes viewers on a journey to discover some of the best examples of 19th century French art ever collected.

Denmark’s Ordrupgaard Collection is a treasure trove featuring some of the finest Impressionist works ever painted. It includes Realist paintings by Corot, Delacroix and Courbet; landscapes of Monet, Pissarro, Cézanne and Sisley; and beautifully observed portraits by Degas, Manet, Morisot, and Gonzalès.

Admission is $9 for film society members and $11 for nonmembers. Customers are encouraged to purchase admission online at rehobothfilm.com. If seats are available, admission can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
