Watch Former Islanders Great Frans Nielsen Score On a Penalty Shot

Olympic hockey! It's the best, I'm a huge fan of the bigger ice surface and while I wish we were able to see some current players over there playing for their countries, there are still a ton of former NHL players over their representing.

One of those guys is former Islanders forward, Frans Nielsen, playing for his home country of Denmark. Today, his country pulled off a massive upset over the Czech Republic 2-1 winning their first-ever Olympic men's hockey game.

Well, not only was it a massive upset for Frans' team but he was a major factor. He scored the game-winning goal on a penalty shot.

I mean, as Islanders fans how many times have we seen this before? A backhand score on a penalty shot (or in the shootout) was the staple for Frans during his time with the Islanders. You knew it was coming but you still couldn't stop it!

In his NHL career, Frans Nielsen was 46.23 percent with 49 goals in the shootout. His 49 shootout goals trails only Jonathan Toews for most all-time. Fransy and Patrick Kane are tied with 49 in second.

Nelson was a great Islander and was likely under appreciated for his time in New York. In 1- years with the team, he had 349 points (119 goals, 230 assists) in 606 games. His best year came during the 2013-2014 season when he had a career high of 58 points (25 goals, 33 assists).

He was a solid two-way forward, and cashed in with a huge contract with Detroit after the 2016 season. Sure, the deal with Detroit did not end well but he had 40 or more points six times in his career and was an absolute weapon in the shootout.

Best of luck to Frans who is playing with the Berlin Polar Bears this year in the DEL. It was awesome to get nostalgic with that goal from earlier.
