Senator Wahls released the following statement:
I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve the residents of Johnson, Cedar, and Muscatine counties in the Iowa State Senate. Since my election three years ago, I’ve worked with Democrats and Republicans to protect Iowans who live in mobile and manufactured housing communities and to advance renewable energy goals that combat climate change.
My political career began when I gave a speech fighting for my two moms and the freedom for all Iowans to marry. Yet today, too many of our freedoms are still under attack by these same conservative, reactionary forces. The right to choose is under assault at the federal level and here in Iowa. Senate Republicans struck blows at our freedom of speech and freedom of press by banning reporters from the Senate chamber. Our hardworking teachers face a slew of restrictions on their profession and how they teach our kids. Even our most fundamental right – the right to vote in a free and fair election – is threatened by conservative lawmakers and their conspiracies.
Now is not the time to give up. There is too much at stake and I am going to keep fighting to restore a Democratic majority to Iowa so we can protect the freedoms of all Iowans. Iowa’s future is still bright, but only if we change the direction our state is heading. That’s why I’m running for re-election: to keep fighting to make Iowa a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
Zach was first elected to the Iowa State Senate in 2018 and was elected to lead the Senate Democratic caucus in November, 2020.
