Rashida Jones Paired With Robot In Dark Comedy Series 'Sunny'

Actress Rashida Jones is likely best known for her work in the comedy realm with the hit series “Parks & Rec” and most recently co-starred with Bill Murray in the Sophia Coppola-directed dramedy, “On The Rocks” that landed at Apple TV+. She’ll be reuniting with Apple for her next high-profile gig after landing a crucial part in their dystopian series “Wool.”

Variety reports that Jones is set to lead a new dark comedy series, “Sunny,” produced by A24 Films, and will air on Apple TV+ as the streaming service continues to seek original content and continues their ongoing relationship with the indie studio. Jones has been tapped to play the central role of Suzie, the main character that is living in Kyoto, Japan when her son and husband disappear in a plane crash and is given a domestic robotic, Sunny, to help with her grieving and investigate their deaths.

“Sunny” is based on the novel “Dark Manual” by author Colin O’Sullivan that has been adapted by Katie Robbins with Lucy Tcherniak set to direct. The creative duo is also part of the project’s producing team as executive producers.

Here is a synopsis of “Sunny” provided by Variety:

“Suzie, an American woman, living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As ‘consolation,’ she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company. Though at first, Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship, as together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family, becoming dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.”

The show has been given a 10-episode order and could help boost the working relationship between Apple/A24.
