Mark Wahlberg as Bill Belichick? Marky Mark wants to play the HOF coach in Tom Brady movie

It’s well known that movie star Mark Wahlberg is as big a sports fan as any other enthusiast. While he has several different claims to fame, from being the frontman for the hip hop group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, for being the co-owner of the restaurant Wahlburgers, or his countless featured roles in major motion pictures, it’s clear, the man has many skills.

From being a talented actor, Wahlberg has had several opportunities to display his affection for competitive sports. In 1995, Wahlberg got his first taste of acting in a sports-based flick, in The Basketball Diaries, but that was just the start of what would be several other films relating to the sports industry for the Boston native.

In 2010, Wahlberg played the role of Micky Ward in The Fighter, which was based on a true story.

While those respective films help show the love Wahlberg has to compete, there was another movie that football fans know Wahlberg for.

Despite being a passionate New England Patriots fan, Wahlberg played the role of Vince Papale for the film Invincible, in which a 30-year old bartender from South Philadelphia lived out his dream to become a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles back in 1976. The film came out in 2006 and it is based on a true story.

While the movie was likely an enjoyable experience for Wahlberg, it doesn’t quite live up to being able to display his passion for his favorite team, the Patriots. Yet, we did catch a glimpse of that admiration in Ted 2, when Wahlberg makes some interesting comments about Tom Brady‘s genetics.

Topping it all off, now Wahlberg wants to actually play a role involving a true story about the historic Patriots dynasty under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. In fact, the actor says he’d like to play the role of coach Belichick if he could.

“I could play his uncle,” Wahlberg said before suggesting another role: “I would love to play [New England Patriots head coach] Bill Belichick.”

It’s a bit ironic since Brady once said in 2018 that he’d like to see Wahlberg play the role of GOAT someday, portraying TB12.

“I’m going with Mark Wahlberg,” Brady said. “A Boston legend, [from] Dorchester, one of the ‘grind it out’ kind of guys. He’d be my choice.”

On the bright side, Wahlberg may actually have the connections to make a Patriots movie happen. He’s already worked with Brady on the set of Ted 2 and Entourage.

To be fair, Wahlberg appeared to be in a jovial, joking mood during the interview with Variety, in which he made the comments about playing Belichick. He even mentioned his plan to get Brady back into the NFL.

“I’m going to get him a one way ticket back to New England. Maybe he could play one more year.”

Good luck with that one Wahlberg. Tom Brady appears to truly be done, but it is notable that he still remains on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers official roster for now. Still, with the Patriots ushering in a new era with Mac Jones, who helped lead his team to the playoffs in his first season, New England appears to have their next quarterback of the future, even if he’s not quite TB12.

As far as the movie goes, it likely won’t be long before a movie producer tries to capitalize on the success of Belichick and Brady during the Patriots dynasty. As long as whoever directs the film serves the story justice, fans would likely be all over one last tale reliving the greatness of a glorious era.
