Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley has revealed that Justin Langer was only offered a six-month contract extension, with no scope for him to continue his role as Australian men's cricket coach after that.

Hockley spoke in a press conference on Saturday afternoon and elaborated on Langer's resignation from the role.

"We were pretty clear with Justin [Langer] that it was for a period of transition," Hockley said.

"We want to be clear and respectful to him - we know Justin has done a fantastic job and made a significant shift.

"When we sat down and looked at the needs of the team going forward, we felt that the team has evolved, and the team's needs or the requirements of the head coach had evolved.

"So we were very, very clear that we were looking at a short-term extension."

Langer tendered his resignation on Saturday morning, which came amid weeks of speculation regarding the 51-year-old's status in the top job and followed a Cricket Australia board meeting on Friday.

He began his post in May 2018 after Darren Lehmann stepped down due to the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

Sports Agency DESG - of whom Langer is a client - first announced the news.

In a written statement issued following the announcement, Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley thanked Langer for his contributions.

“Justin has been an outstanding coach of the Australian men’s team over the past four years," Hockley wrote.

“He has restored the trust in the team and his legacy is assured.

“We are extremely proud of his achievements since he took over in 2018, including the recent T20 World Cup victory and Ashes success.

“We are naturally disappointed Justin has decided against continuing as coach but respect his decision and wish him all the best in the future.

“I would like to sincerely thank Justin and also his family for all that they have given to Australian cricket over the past four years, for which we remain eternally grateful.”

Australia departs for a Test tour of Pakistan in three weeks, with assistant coach Andrew McDonald officially appointed as interim coach.
