Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears seeks new black caucus after fellow Republican turned away

.

The Virginia Black Caucus denied delegate A.C. Cordoza’s membership Thursday. While he’s African American, he is also a Republican and suspects that is why he was blocked from joining.

Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears has a solution: Start a new truly black caucus.

As a black Republican, Sears sympathized with the discrimination Cordoza experienced. “We’re trying to start a new caucus,” she tweeted Friday.

In the tweet, she included a link to Cordoza’s story.

“Name suggestions? The You’re Not Black Enough Caucus, The No More Division Caucus, The Welcome Caucus, The Let’s Do Away With Caucuses Caucus, The FRIEND Caucus, The We Shall Overcome Caucus, The I Can’t Believe They Didn’t Accept Me Caucus, The Watch the Trolls Come Out Caucus, The Tear Down This Wall Caucus, The Becky With The Good Hair Caucus,” she tweeted separately.

Virginia’s black caucus claims in its Twitter bio to be “committed to improving the [economic], educational, political, [and] social conditions of African Americans [and] underrepresented groups in VA.” Currently, there are 21 members — 17 in the House and four in the Senate — but all are Democrats.

As a result of being blocked, Cordoza called out the caucus on Twitter. “It’s important to have different Black voices at the table to address challenges in our community,” Cordoza wrote. “In this nation’s history, Civil Rights leaders always understood this. I’m disappointed that the VABlackCaucus does not embrace true diversity.”

Sears is the only black Republican the caucus has allowed, serving in the House from 2002 to 2004.
