Lorain County Commissioner Matt Lundy will run for another term on the board.

Lundy, the lone Democrat on the three-person board, filed his paperwork Feb. 2 with the Lorain County Board of Elections.

He has served on the commission board since winning the election in 2014.

Prior to that, Lundy served four terms as a state representative and two years on Avon Lake City Council.

He was voted in as president of Lorain County commissioners in January.

Lundy said he believes there still is plenty of unfinished business when it comes to what he set out to do when he first was elected as commissioner, which is why at age 62, he’s seeking another term.

“We are in the middle of a (coronavirus) pandemic,” he said. “We have federal funds that are coming in to invest in the community to help it get through the pandemic and come out on the other end stronger.”

Lundy pointed out he “ran point” for the board’s role on the Complete Count census group, which worked to have members of the community fill out their census forms during 2020 Unites States Census.

“We had strong census numbers which certainly help bring in more federal dollars,” he said.

Lundy also represented the commission board on the Lorain County Community Protection Team, which was set up to keep the public informed on the latest involving COVID-19.

“We were bringing everybody to the table so we could talk through and make sure we had an ongoing message and exchange updates on the pandemic, and how to best work together to get through that,” he said.

Lundy said he also worked to get money to nonprofits that lost funding in 2021, when newly elected county commissioners Dave Moore and Michelle Hung voted down $4.6 in funding over a dispute whether the money could be used to fund charities.

“I’m still having talks with them to get many things implemented again to help those organizations get through the pandemic,” he said.

In announcing his bid for re-election, Lundy renewed his pledge to not raise the sales tax in Lorain County.

“I kept my promise to taxpayers when I voted against imposing the sales tax in 2016,” he said. “In 2020, I voted to cut the sales tax in Lorain County.

“Government, like our families, must live within its means.”

Lundy also dismissed rumors that if he’s re-elected commissioner, he would step down during his term to run for mayor of Avon Lake, where he grew up and currently lives in.

“I’ve made it very clear, I have no interest in running for mayor of Avon Lake,” he said. “I enjoy living here. I enjoy the brief time I served on the City Council, but I’m very happy and enjoy my capacity as a county commissioner.

“I have no interest in being mayor of Avon Lake. The Republicans like to spread that rumor, but there is no truth to that whatsoever.”
