Jeon Somi Revelation: Female Soloist Shares Details of Her Shocking Move to The Black Label

During an interview with Elle Singapore, Jeon Somi shared how she ended up joining The Black Label, a subsidiary of YG Entertainment that producer Teddy Park founded.

Jeon Somi Shares How She Joined Teddy Park's The Black Label

On Jan. 27, Elle Singapore released an article covering the interview they had with female K-pop soloist Jeon Somi. The magazine also included several pictorial shots of the idol for their February 2022 issue.

Jeon Somi is known to be a former trainee of JYP Entertainment, currently home to TWICE, Stray Kids, ITZY and more. She initially became popular when she joined the reality show "SIXTEEN." She later competed in "Produce 101" and finished in the first place, which gave her the chance to debut as a member of the project girl group I.O.I.

In August 2018, Somi left JYP Entertainment after her exclusive contract with the agency expired. The next month, she was announced to have signed with The Black Label, home to male R&B singer Zion.T.

During the interview with Elle Singapore, Jeon Somi talked about how she signed with Teddy Park's The Black Label. She revealed that Teddy contacted her to personally ask her if she would like to come to the company to talk about her future activities.

Somi then shared that she saw sincerity through Teddy Park's eyes while they were discussing her career. She stated, "When I met him, he had so much passion in explaining all the opportunities he saw in me. I felt the sincerity through his eyes, and knew that I could trust my future with his direction."

Jeon Somi continued that joining The Black Label was the best decision she has made in her life so far.

The soloist also told Elle Singapore the opportunity Teddy Park's agency gave her that she never had before when she was still a part of a group.

Somi said, "In a group, it was harder to express all of my creative sides because the focus is on the collective." She continued that she finally had the opportunity to voice her opinion in music when she signed with The Black Label. She further said that she can now participate in the creative process of her album, from songwriting to music videos.

Jeon Somi Makes a Solo Comeback with First Studio Album "XOXO"

Jeon Somi's latest solo comeback took place on Oct. 29, 2021, when she dropped her first full-length album "XOXO," which consists of a total of eight songs including the title track "XOXO" and her previous songs "What You Waiting For," "Birthday," "Outta My Head," among others.

The title song "XOXO" became Jeon Somi's first entry to the Billboard Global 200 when it claimed No. 185 for the week ending on Nov. 13. The tune also debuted on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart at No. 104, her highest peak on the tally so far.

Moreover, Jeon Somi's "XOXO" album entered at No. 9 on the Worldwide iTunes Album chart, while the title track debuted at No. 27 on the Worldwide iTunes Song Chart.
