There were some who forecasted that January would again be quieter as clubs continued to assess the financial damage caused by the pandemic. Not so, certainly in the Premier League, where a major deadline day of spending pushed overall January outlay beyond all but one year (2018) in the league’s history.

“It’s the end of a chapter but not the book,” says the midfielder, who reserves special praise for Mauricio Pochettino.

“I’ve had a few good conversations with him (Lampard) already and he’s a player I’ve admired watching his whole career,” Alli told Sky Sports.

“To get the opportunity to work with him now is very exciting and I’m sure we’re going to do great things together.”

One man unlikely to figure at all is Ousmane Dembele, who looks set to remain frozen out of the first-team picture having made clear his desire not to sign a new deal under the terms offered by Barcelona, but also not wanting to move on in January. The Frenchman’s contract concludes in June, which means he remains in a state of quasi-exile until then, unlikely to play but now unable to leave.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta believes Dembele already knows his next destination, but says that the situation “makes no sense”:

We are still, by the way, awaiting final confirmation of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s arrival at Barcelona, though photos have shown the former Arsenal striker at Xavi’s training session today.

The club will have a decision to make over which of their four January signings to register for the Europa League - competition rules state that only three new players can be registered, which would mean one of Dani Alves, Ferran Torres, Adama Traore and Aubameyang is set to miss out.

They didn’t quite manage to get it over the line last night, but according to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool remain keen to secure the signature of Fabio Carvalho. The youngster is out of contract in the summer and any move at that stage would require a visit to a tribunal to determine terms, but the Merseyside club hope they can reach an agreement with Fulham to avoid unnecessary convolution.
