Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Chief of Detectives Paul Skill announced the arrest of Jacob M. Harris, a 32-year-old resident of Egg Harbor Township and officer for the Ocean City Police Department.

On Jan. 26, the Lower Township Police Department was called to a residence for a report of a tracking device found on a vehicle. Further investigation revealed the device was connected to Harris, according to a news release.

The incident was investigated by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Unit.

As a result of the investigation, Harris was charged on Jan. 27 with one count of stalking, a fourth-degree crime. The Prosecutor’s Office did not immediately release further details about the alleged stalking incident.

Harris was arrested without incident and later released on a summons pending court proceedings. He is currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of his criminal proceedings, the news release stated.

Defendants convicted of a fourth-degree crime can be sentenced up to 18 months in New Jersey State Prison.

Sutherland urges anyone who may have information regarding this investigation to contact the Professional Standards Unit of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at (609) 465-1135.
