A Chautauqua County woman has been sentenced to jail time and probation after assaulting a Buffalo police officer with a megaphone. Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced that the 22-year-old was sentenced the morning of Friday, January 28, 2022, before State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller. She will spend 30 days in jail followed by three years of probation. Karcz pleaded guilty to the charge against her - one count of Assault in the Third Degree, which is a misdemeanor

Savannah E. Karcz of Silver Creek assaulted the police officer on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at just before 10 am. Police officers with the Buffalo Police Department were blocking the entrance to Delaware Park on Ring Road. She was trying to enter the park in her vehicle by driving around the patrol car that was parked at the entrance. When the police stopped Karcz, she got out of her car and hit the patrol car with her hands. She also yelled at the officers using her megaphone. When the officer tried to remove the megaphone from his face, she hit him on his head with it. The officer was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he was treated for swelling and pain. It's not clear why Karcz had the megaphone or why officers were blocking her from entering the park.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn said,

Any assault on a police officer will not be tolerated. I hope that the victim feels that justice has been served by this defendant being sentenced to a period of incarceration.
