Celebrate the achievements of Black people and learn about how the legacies of American history shape Black life today:

Sur La Bay: A Festival of Music from the African Diaspora

7-10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, College Hall, New College of Florida

A celebration of Black music and culture, this event will have attendees grooving to R&B, soul, Jazz, Afro-punk and Afrobeat music, with dance artists and a DJ spinning the latest dance music, as well. Katerina Canyon Poetry Reading

2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, virtual, Bookstore1Sarasota 

Award-winning poet, bestselling author, civil rights activist and essayist Katerina Canyon shares her latest poetry collection, Surviving Home. The collection challenges the beliefs of family and the fantasies of tradition, showing that home can be a place that you endure rather than a place where you are nurtured. ASALH: Black Bodies, Part II: Race Norming in the NFL

5-6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, virtual, ASALH

The second session focuses on health and wellbeing among Black athletes. It will feature a roundtable discussion among former NFL players and sports medicine professionals about issues of race norming, mental health and other topics. The cost is $65 for parts I and II.
