UPDATE 3:25 p.m. (2/2/22): Virginia State Police (VSP) has confirmed the time of the crash on Hardy Road that took place on Thursday, Jan. 27 took place at 8:25 p.m., not 10:30 p.m. which was previously announced by VSP.


FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A teenage girl from Moneta lost her life following a Franklin County crash that ended with a vehicle fire along Hardy Road Thursday night.

Virginia State Police say the single-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, about a mile south of Route 122.

According to officials, a 2010 Ford Escape was traveling south on Hardy Road when it crossed the center line of the roadway, ran off the left side of the road, struck a tree, and caught on fire.

Police identified the driver of the Ford as 18-year-old Claire Elizabeth Overstreet. She was not wearing her seatbelt and died at the scene of the incident.

As of this writing, police say they are still investigating this deadly crash.
