Wayne Bowlers Close Regular Season With Road Wins, District Action Begins Tuesday

PENDER – With district bowling competition beginning next Tuesday, the Wayne High girls and boys bowling teams closed out their regular season Thursday late afternoon.

From Pender Lanes in Pender, WHS visited Thurston County.

Both teams battled tough lane conditions but battled through the dry lanes. The Wayne boys won 13-8 as the Blue Devil girls won 12-9.  The WHS boys end the regular season 18-3 while the Wayne girls end the regular season 20-1.

Head Wayne bowling coach Josh Johnson said, “I am so proud how both teams battled tonight. It was not easy. The boys got it done in the individual matches. The girls fought back against an extremely tough TC squad tonight and found a way to get the win.”

From the boys competition, Wayne got off to a slow start in game one. Both teams struggled through most of the game. The Blue Devils did find a bit of a groove in the middle frames and held on for a 719-668 pin fall victory. Winning matches in game one for Wayne was Shayne Geidner (167), Brooks Kneifl (149) and James Dorcey (141). Other scorers for Wayne was Calvin Starzl (143) and Brogan Foote (119).

Game two had the two teams slugging it out again through the frames. Marks were hard to come by in the dry conditions but Wayne again got just enough to win 738-673. Winning matches in game two were Brogan Foote (174), Brooks Kneifl (148), James Dorcey (135) and Shayne Geidner/Jacob Anderson (123). Other score for Wayne was Calvin Starzl (158).  Pender would win the baker match but again Wayne would win the total match 13-8.

 

In girls action, the Blue Devils found themselves in a fierce battle with the home team all night.  Both teams fought as Thurston County (Pender) caught fire and pulled away with a 712-651 team win. The lone win for the Blue Devils was Brianna Nissen with a 173 while other scorers were Jersi Jensen (134), Jamie Janke (130), Riley Haschke (111) and Catherine Rutenbeck (103).

Heading into game two the Blue Devils had to mount a comeback. Wayne had to get at least five points to have a chance to complete the comeback and ended up with six points.  Wayne won the pinfall total 677-642. Leading the charge on the comeback and winning points were Riley Haschke (149), Joslyn Johnson (137) and Brianna Nissen (133). Other scorers were Jamie Janke (145) and Jersi Jensen (113).

This left only the winner take all best of three Baker series. Wayne came out firing in game one and pulled away for a 176-118 victory. Game two had the two teams battle back and forth throughout with the Blue Devils needing a spare in the tenth and anchor bowler Janke threw a strike to seal the 139-133 win. Wayne would complete the comeback and win the match 12-9.

The Wayne Blue Devil junior varsity team competed tonight in Pender. Scoring for Wayne was Carter Hasemann (138 & 104), Ethan Wibben (134), Jamison Meyer (120), Nina Hammer (113), Charli Sievers (99), Jamison Meyer/Coby Dickes (99), Carlyle Young (98), Chase Adams (96) and Maddie Janke (89).

The Wayne High girls and boys bowling program will compete in District action on Tuesday, February 1 in Norfolk starting at noon.
