Serena Williams has shattered many records over her career.

Some of the tennis champion's most memorable moments include when she won the women's singles final at the 2016 Wimbledon championships, as well as when she became a four-time gold medallist at the 2012 London Olympics.

Now, the 40-year-old (who ranks number two on Forbes' 'Highest-Paid Female Athletes' list), has broken another record, which is all to do with the sale of a 1999 trading card that a lucky buyer bought for a whooping £87,000 ($117,000).

The card was bought at PWCC's January Premiere Auction, yet details about the buyer and seller are unknown.

The card features a photo of the sports legend, aged 18, during an early stage of her sports career.

What's more, the record-breaking amount that Williams' trading card sold for is over double that of her last card, sold for £33,096 ($44,280).

When Williams' trading card was originally offered over two decades ago in a Sports Illustrated for Kids issue, she hadn't yet won any of her 23 grand slam single titles.

A former card created in 2003 by the company NetPro – the first to officially produce licensed tennis trading cards – was sold at auction for £91.727 ($96,000).

Talking about the mother-of-one, the director of marketing at PWCC, Chris Callahan, said: 'We're extremely excited to see both the $117,000 and $96,000 sales for Serena Williams' cards as it reaffirms what many of us already knew: that she is the greatest of all time.'

Callahan also highlighted that while there has been a swift increase in women's sport cards over the past year, the recent sale of Williams' is especially significant.

Williams, who made history as the fist athlete on Forbes' 'Richest Self-Made Women' list back in 2019, was forced to withdraw from the recent Australian Open Tournament after a painful leg injury around her right hamstring.

'I am not where I need to be physically to compete,' she previously wrote in an announcement, after seeking medical advice.

She did, however, remain optimistic, concluding her post: 'I will miss seeing the fans but am excited to return and compete at my highest level.'

As for what Williams has been up to since the start of the year, the seven-time Wimbledon champion was announced as having joined football game company Sorare, valued at £3.2 billion ($4.3 billion), as a board member to help conquer women’s leagues in US Sports.

And she's continuing to flourish in her career while, of course, mothering her four-year-old daughter Alexis, who she co-parents with her tech entrepreneur husband Alexis Ohanian.

Lately, we've seen a host of sweet snaps of her and her mini-me daughter Alexis bonding, including one of them posing on a tennis court together.

We'll wait to see if Alexis follows in her mother's footsteps.
