The cat is out of the bag.

The highly anticipated feline addition to the Biden household has moved into the White House, first lady Jill Biden announced Friday morning. The cat, a two-year-old, green-eyed, gray and white farm cat from Pennsylvania named Willow, is one of just a dozen feline companions to join a presidential family in U.S. history.

“Willow is settling into the White House with her favorite toys, treats, and plenty of room to smell and explore,” said Michael LaRosa, the first lady’s spokesman, in a statement.

The Bidens first signaled their intent to get a cat after President Joe Biden was elected in 2020, and Jill Biden reaffirmed this in April, saying they had one “waiting in the wings.”

“A farm cat from Pennsylvania, Willow made quite an impression on Dr. [Jill] Biden in 2020 when she jumped up on the stage and interrupted her remarks during a campaign stop,” LaRosa said. “Seeing their immediate bond, the owner of the farm knew that Willow belonged with Dr. Biden.”

The Bidens added puppy Commander to the first family in December of last year after their previous pet, a German shepherd named Major, had bitten at least two people in the last year. Major was eventually rehomed, White House officials said.

Willow will be the first cat to live in the White House since President George W. Bush’s cat, India, in 2009.
