Predicted snow totals increased for parts of North Jersey. Here's what to expect

As the nor'easter approaches, forecasters have a clearer idea of how much snow is going to fall across North Jersey this weekend.

The path of the storm has shifted slightly west, according to meteorologist Tiffany Fortier of the National Weather Service, which means snowfall projections have also increased. Bergen, Essex and the eastern parts of Passaic counties can now expect between 6 to 8 inches of show, which will likely begin Friday night. Western Passaic County could see between 4 and 8 inches.

Because the storm has shifted, all of New Jersey is under some sort of warning or advisory. Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Morris counties are all under a winter storm warning from the National Weather Service, whereas Sussex County is under a winter weather advisory.

The storm is forecast to begin in earnest Friday night and could continue all the way until Saturday evening. As a result, the state Office of Emergency Management has advised people to stay home during the storm. Gov. Phil Murphy is scheduled to have a weather briefing at 11:30 a.m. Friday in advance of the storm.

There's also snow in the more immediate forecast, with a small cold front passing through the area, leading to a chance of snow showers Friday morning. But Fortier said that is nothing major and there is expected to be little to no accumulation.

Though North Jersey's predicted snowfall has grown, the region will still miss the worst of the storm. Farther south near the Jersey Shore, parts of the area could get up to 18 inches of snow.

It's likely that a record will be broken for snowfall on Jan. 29 in North Jersey. The record for snow totals in Bergenfield on Jan. 29, for example, is only .5 inches in 1986, according to Bob Ziff of the North Jersey Weather Observers. The record for Jan. 28 is 4.8 inches set in 2004.
